Free-spirited Elizabeth Foster turned her back on her father’s photography business to pursue musical theater, but a career on the stage remains second to a career behind the camera. The possibility of a one-show contract means she’s a few weeks from unemployment forcing her home, and her dreams of pursuing professional photography reemerge. With photography and theater opportunities unfolding before her, Elizabeth faces her biggest challenge yet—listening to her heart.

Meanwhile, sought-after photographer Ryan Callahan has put his career on hold to help his sister’s family, but the promise of a bigger assignment could lure him away so he can begin building a family of his own. With professional opportunities and personal obligations pulling at him, Ryan faces his toughest challenge—balancing family, relationships, and work.

If given the choice, what dreams would develop for Elizabeth and Ryan? And will they learn to trust each other enough to focus on love?

GUEST POST – Ten Workplace Romances On the Big Screen

In fiction—and in real life—romance can blossom in the middle of a working relationship. Come to think of it, each of my previous two novels have also featured couples falling in love while keeping up with the day job. But rather than discuss specific books with workplace romances—which perhaps not all of us have read—I started thinking about other stories we romance-genre-lovers can talk about. The stories on the big screen. The “chick-flicks” that make us smile.

So, without further delay, here are ten popular movies (including two classics) where two lonely hearts working together find love.

  1. His Girl Friday: In this classic, Cary Grant plays the role of a newspaper editor trying to keep his ex-wife—an investigative reporter—from remarrying.
  2. The Shop Around the Corner: Another classic, this time featuring two employees at a leather goods shop in Budapest who can’t stand each other…but are anonymously falling in love through letters. Which sounds an awful lot like…
  3. You’re Got Mail: She owns an independent bookstore and he owns a large chain of bookstores about to put her out of business. They’ve got their work-related encounters…and then “you’ve got mail” correspondence too.
  4. Top Gun: He’s a hotshot pilot and she’s an instructor at the special flight school…who isn’t supposed to get involved with any of the students.
  5. The American President: As implied, he’s the President of the United States. She’s a lobbyist trying to gain support for a specific bill and they rub shoulders at a State dinner.
  6. Groundhog Day: The snarky weatherman just wants to report the rodent’s forecast and get out of town while his news producer wants to stick around for a bit. Add in a never-ending repeat of the same day, and eventually he falls in love, improves as a person, and wins her heart.
  7. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty: He’s a negative assets manager for Life magazine and she’s the coworker he has a crush on…but can’t seem to approach in real life.
  8. The Proposal: She’s a high level editor at a publishing company about to be deported and he’s her lowly assistant who agrees to an engagement charade…with a few conditions.
  9. Miss Congeniality: A tomboyish FBI agent goes undercover at a beauty pageant to prevent a bombing while her partner provides backup.
  10. The Cutting Edge: This one is especially fitting considering the current Olympics! Put a former hockey player on the ice with a figure-skating princess to pursue an Olympic medal…and the ice and sparks and toe picks fly.

Of course, I know that I’ve only scratched the surface of potential movies featuring a workplace romance. So while I pull out the popcorn, it’s your turn. What other titles would you add to this list?
