Book Review: The Iron Trial by Holly Black and Cassandra Clare

The Iron TrialTitle: The Iron Trial

Authors: Holly Black & Cassandra Clare

Series: Magisterium #1

Released: September 9, 2014

Publisher: Scholastic

Book Summary:

Most kids would do anything to pass the Iron Trial.

Not Callum Hunt. He wants to fail.

All his life, Call has been warned by his father to stay away from magic. If he succeeds at the Iron Trial and is admitted into the Magisterium, he is sure it can only mean bad things for him.

So he tries his best to do his worst – and fails at failing.

Now the Magisterium awaits him. It’s a place that’s both sensational and sinister, with dark ties to his past and a twisty path to his future.

The Iron Trial is just the beginning, for the biggest test is still to come . . .

Well I liked this one.  Yes I did see the similarities to other stories but I thought there was plenty of original content too.

I think Holly Black and Cassandra Clare are both great writers. Unfortunately they usually write books I am uncomfortable reading and promoting due to their content. Not the case with The Iron Trial.

This is an fun middle grade tale that held my interest. Most stories for this age group find my mind wandering and me struggling to finish them but not so with this one.

Passed this one to my middle grader.

  1. Huh, I didn’t realise this one was strictly PG, thanks for making that clear, Kathy. Means I might just read with my son… I love Holly Black, I think she’s one of the greats, but I agree with you. My son is ten, and I’m not sure I could read just any HB title with him. Thank you for posting!

  2. Hadn’t heard of this one. Thanks!

  3. This sounds like a good place for me to start with both authors – thanks!

  4. I am reading Cassandra Clares Mortal Instruments series at the minute and loving it. I am not sure if I will pick this Series up but I am glad you enjoyed it.
