Guest Post: Setting of the Story

To me, the setting of a story is so important. I’ve always tried to treat it as if it were an important character in a book, so I don’t slight it. Of course, few of us want to read a book that gives us paragraph after paragraph of facts and figures about a place. I know when I’m reading a novel, I don’t want to hit headlong into a section that feels like I just took a pitstop at Wikipedia.

On the other hand, if there isn’t something about the setting woven into the fabric of the story, it can feel unanchored and confusing. Setting can help create mood and reflect feelings. It can also give us gigantic clues about the characters. Maggie (my main character in Maggie’s Song (Timeless Romance Anthology: Love Letter Collection) is adventurous and low maintenance. We know this because her career is guiding people to Havasupai Falls (along with the gorgeous Australian Luke). We’d know she was an entirely different person if she lived in downtown Dallas or in a loft in Manhattan.
Charlotte, the main character in The Husband Maker series, lives in a small walk-up in San Francisco. She’s a city girl. So what happens when you take her away from a busy, crowded city with almost 18,000 people per square mile to the Isle of Lewis, an island in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, where the population is 17 people per square mile?
Charlotte needs to heal and think and decide the direction she wants her life to take, so she visits Flynn at his home on the Isle of Lewis. The island, and Flynn, of course, are important parts of Charlotte’s story and the setting had to be right.
I knew Flynn was Scottish, but I wasn’t sure where in Scotland he was from until I talked to a friend of mine who’d spent several months living in Stornoway (the largest town on the isle). Most settings I’ve used are places I’ve either lived or visited for research. I couldn’t pack up and fly to Scotland (darn!!!) so I watched Youtube videos and looked at pictures and real estate listings and travelogues. It didn’t take me long to know this was Flynn’s home, and this was where Charlotte would rediscover herself.
Look at those pictures? How could someone not find peace there?
Thank goodness I had the internet and someone who had lived there to help me, because I wanted to be sure I captured the spirit of the place. I hope I was successful.
Scotland is where many of my ancestors came from, and it’s on my list of places I hope to see before I die. After writing The Match Maker, I know if I ever make it to Scotland, I’ll have to give myself a few days on the Isle of Lewis.

Match Maker Book CoverThe Match Maker by Karey White (The Husband Maker #2)

(Summary contains spoilers if you have not yet read book #1 The Husband Maker)

It’s been six months since Charlotte and Kyle broke up, and the Husband Maker strikes again. Kyle is officially engaged, while Charlotte is still nursing a broken heart.

In an effort to get Charlotte out of her rut, she and her best friend decide it’s time for some good old-fashioned matchmaking. While Aleena arranges for Charlotte to meet up with a handsome Scottish tourist, Charlotte gets her two best friends together. But when sparks start to fly between Aleena and Angus, Charlotte is left feeling more alone that ever–at least until the charming Scotsman becomes more than just a safe, rebound guy and teaches her that maybe, just maybe, she can dare to open her heart again.

  1. I would agree – setting is something very important in a novel. I hate it when I can’t visualize where something is happening. I also like the setting best when it isn’t just a chunk describing every little thing, but woven into the narrative beautifully.
