Daughter of Chaos
There comes a time in every witch’s life when she must choose her path. Darlena’s friends have already chosen, so why is it so hard for her to make up her mind? Now, Darlena is out of time. Under pressure from Hecate, the Queen of all witches, Darlena makes a rash decision to choose Red magic, a path no witch in her right mind would dare take. As a Red witch, she will be responsible for chaos and mayhem, drawing her deep into darkness. Will the power of Red magic prove too much for Darlena, or will she learn to control it before it’s too late?
DAUGHTER OF CHAOS is the first in the RED MAGIC paranormal YA trilogy.
Jen McConnel now lives and writes in the beautiful state of North Carolina. When she isn’t crafting worlds of fiction, she teaches writing composition at a community college. Once upon a time, she was a middle school teacher, a librarian, and a bookseller, but those are stories for another time.
If you could invite any 5 people to dinner who would you choose?
That’s such a fun question! Okay, first let me say that this would be a dinner in a quiet restaurant (I can’t really cook). I’d love to get Shakespeare, Neil Gaiman, J.K. Rowling, Cleopatra, and Jane Austen at a table together. Can you imagine the literary and historical debates they would have? (Yes. My history nerd is showing).
You have won one million dollars what is the first thing that you would buy?
A beach house. I dream about living at the ocean some day!
What’s your favorite season/weather?
I LOVE fall; there’s nothing like a crisp, sunny September day to brighten my spirits and inspire me.
Favorite places to travel?
I’ve got a bad case of wanderlust, but so far, my two favorite trips have been to Paris and Egypt. I’d go back to either place again and again, if I could.
I was raised on old-school music, so it’s got to be Billy Joel and Queen.
Vanilla. For years, that was the only perfume I ever wanted to wear; I guess I wanted to smell like baked goods. Now, I’ve just got vanilla candles all over the house.
What is on your “keeper shelf” of books?
I love this question. My desk actually has a bookshelf hutch, and the books I keep around me while I write are some of my favorites. There’s The Dark is Rising series by Susan Cooper, The Three Musketeers, Tale of Two Cities, Little Women, The Secret Garden, and Gone with the Wind to fill my love of the classics, and a variety of books on writing, including Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott.
How do you come up with the characters names/personalities?
Sometimes, a name just comes to me, and other times, I spend hours combing through the baby name books I keep as references, checking the meanings of names and trying to get it just right. I rarely change a character’s name once I’ve named them, but sometimes, it happens. It seems like once I get the right name, the personality naturally follows.
Do your characters really talk to you?
YES! Some more so than others; Darlena’s voice is still really strong in my head, even though I finished the first draft of her story three years ago.
Where is your favorite spot to write?
I love working in my office (aka the guest bedroom); the walls are a perfect periwinkle blue, I’ve got windows looking out on the street, and the space feels really good. I also really enjoy writing in hotel rooms when I’m at conferences; sometimes I surprise myself in a new setting!
If you were not a writer, what would you like to do?
I always wanted to be an archaeologist when I was younger, so if we’re talking fantasy world, I’d love to do that, or maybe work for a museum, acquiring ancient art. Something that gives me an excuse to learn odd things and travel would be perfect.
Is there a song you could list as the theme song for your book or any of your characters?
The song I’ve listened to whenever I get stuck in the Red Magic series is “It’s the End of the World as We Know It”, by R.E.M. It gets me in the mood to create more chaos for my characters!
Write a Haiku about your book
Darlena’s rash choice
may one day destroy the things
most precious to her.
Thanks so much for the interview! I had a blast talking about writing and DOC!
