Today I have the pleasure of introducing you to another of my associate reviewers – Karla.
Karla and I are pretty close on what we consider acceptable.
Here is what Karla has to say on content in books.
Language: I don’t swear, so I definitely notice it when I read it in a book. I will read books with some swearing but if there’s too much then it tends to ruin the book for me. I consider damn and hell to be pretty mild (though I don’t use them).
Violence: I don’t like violence and I wouldn’t enjoy a book that portrayed it in a positive light. For example, I didn’t read Hunger Games for the longest time because I thought it would be far too violent for me. After my oldest daughter read it and couldn’t stop talking about it, I took the plunge. It was a great book and I think the fact that the violence was portrayed as deplorable worked for me.
Sex: The less, the better! I like how you described it as “closed door sex”. I don’t want the details or descriptions. I don’t mind some kissing and I enjoy clean romance. I do think that the audience has some bearing on what is acceptable. In my review of Look Twice I noted that it was specifically marketed to older teens and women, which made the “closed door sex” less offensive then if it had been a book meant for younger readers.
What I don’t/won’t read: I won’t read books about witches, wizards, demons, angels, or demi-gods. I don’t like horror or very scary books.
I am a wife and a mom to 3 (20, 13, and 11). My ideal home would be on a beach by the ocean, with an enormous library, and a personal chef. I enjoy rubber-stamping and creating cards. I love animals and I have 2 rabbits, a Jack Russell terrier, a calico cat, 20 chickens, and a Missouri Fox Trotter (my daughter’s horse).
