Ever since twelve year old Isabelle Tresdon’s silver strand of hair sprouted, it’s been nothing but trouble: bleeding pink dust and sparking like a firecracker. Refusing to be known as the girl with the freaky, grandma hair, she wishes it never grew and the hair withers and tarnishes.
The only problem is, the strand is Isabelle’s source of magic, and she can transform particles of energy into matter. It’s also her ticket into Mastermind Academy, a secret school inside the earth’s core. Five days remain before the strand drains her magic and life, forcing Isabelle to enter into a deal with two trickster Masterminds to save it. But what she doesn’t count on is there is more at stake than just her life.
The Silver Strand, a MG Fantasy Adventure for 9-12 year olds, is book 1 in the Mastermind Academy Series.
One thing you need to know about LJ Clarkson is that she tells BIG lies. She tells everyone that she gave up her career as an Environmental Engineer and Project Manager to write full time. But that’s not entirely true. Ten percent of the time she sleeps in. Fifteen percent of her day, she spends surfing the internet, researching for new books and her business. Ok, fine. Two percent is for research. But she’s only admitting it so she doesn’t end up like Boldrick. For eighteen point seven five percent of her day, she runs her promotional and support site for authors, called Indicated (www.indicated.com.au). The rest of her time involves writing, reading, watching movies and TV, walking her dogs and falling asleep whenever her boyfriend talks technical computer lingo. Truthfully, she hates early mornings, mondays, grammar (yuck! just ask her poor editor!), broccoli and cleaning. If you would like to drop her and line and let her know what you think of the book, she would love to hear from you. Just not before 8:30am in the morning.
Character Interview with Isabelle Tresdon
Hello Kathy and her readers *waves* I’m so excited for my first interview. I feel so famous now! Ok, let’s answer some questions you’re all dying to know.
If you were a superhero what would your name be?
That’s easy: The Silver Strand. I hear LJ has created a comic book named after me in her new book, Heaven and Hound. She gave me a pink lightning bolt scar on my cheek! Can’t wait to see what I look like!
What is your favorite thing to eat for breakfast?
Mom tries to make me eat all this healthy, high-fibre stuff like bran, fruit and yoghurt (gross). I’d rather eat bugs *coughs and goes bright red* I mean muesli.
What was your favorite book when you were a child/teen?
Mom bought me Top Scientific Discoveries of 2011 for my 12th birthday and I love it. My fave chapter is about using black holes to measure distances in the universe. LJ tells me I’m going to need this info for the third book. *scratches head* Hope I remember it. My brain is already chock full of news things I’m learning at Mastermind Academy.
What book did you read that you’d be embarrassed to admit?
Swear you won’t tattle to Boldrick? *shakes pinky fingers with Kathy* Everyone in his class at Mastermind Academy has to read his autobiography to get to know their teacher better. Zzzzzz it was so boring. He just bragged about all the air surfing medals he’d won. I fell asleep at page 10.
Oh I’ve had lots. Like the time I was turned into a toad and dad tried to kill me. But the worst, was when Ramala the dragon threatened to season me with herbs and roast me.
If you could have any superpower what would you choose?
I really want to fly like Superman does, especially into space! Guess I’ll just have to wait till Boldrick teaches the class how to fly our Mesuras –it’s an anti-gravitational flying device that unfolds from my bracelet. Cool huh?
What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?
Peppermint choc chip. Sometimes I tell mom I have a sore tummy because she gives me some to soothe it. Shhhh, don’t give away my secret, okay?
If you could meet one person who has died who would you choose?
Oh boy, I’m really itching to meet Nikola Tesla. He’s the greatest scientist of all time. Besides inventing the Mesura bracelet, he invented x-ray machines, radars, alternating current used in electricity and radios. He’s my hero.
If a movie was made about your life, who would you want to play the lead role and why?
There’s going to be a movie made about my story? Cool! Umm. I like the girl who plays Lucy in The Chronicles Of Narnia. She better not squeal like a big girl though when acting as me. How embarrassing!
I’m not as good as my friend Bianca, but I’m pretty good at lassoing her horses.
If you were a bird, which one would you be?
An Aquila audax. That’s a Wedged Tailed Eagle in English. They’re one of the biggest birds in the world, with a wingspan over 2 meters, and they soar pretty high. I’d love to have amazing eyesight and hearing again. Reminds of the time I was a toad. Sigh.
This has been so much fun. Can’t wait to do it again. Thanks for having me. See ya!
