Welcome to the Just One Year blog tour! After spending an amazing day and night together in Paris, Just One Year is Willem’s story, picking up where Allyson’s journey in Just One Day ended. In honor of the world-spanning romance, we asked author Gayle Forman to share her memories for 12 different cities, each of which is featured in either Just One Day or Just One Year (or both!). Follow along on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays throughout September as Gayle tells her story in anticipation of the October release of Just One Year!
Author Gayle Forman
Gayle Forman is an award-winning, international bestselling author and journalist whose articles have appeared in numerous publications. She is the author of the companion title Just One Day, as well as New York Times bestsellers If I Stay and Where She Went, and Sisters in Sanity (HarperTeen).
I’m not one of those people who romanticizes Paris. Paris always seemed a little sheathed in romance and fairy dust or a little too fancy—like an Hermès scarf. Lots of people admire those silk scarves, but me? I kind of like those cheapy print numbers you get at flea markets.
But when I dreamed the scene in the warehouse that would become the seed of Just One Day, I knew that the characters were abroad; not just any old abroad, but Paris. To make it work, for their story, for my story, I knew this Paris had to be one I’d only seen glimpses of, in graffiti covered walls, outside the métro, in movies, a Paris I suspected existed but hadn’t discovered for myself.
When I discovered it—in the outer arrondissements and neighborhoods like Villette and Belleville and Barbès Rochechouart—I fell in love with the city. Hard. Because Paris doesn’t need fairy dust or Hermès scarves. Bicycles on a cobblestone street, a cat sleeping in a window, a street market, a bistro in winter, the windows fogged up, Parisians in a café, lingering over coffee, arguing about life and love…what is more magic than that?

Just One Year
After spending an amazing day and night together in Paris, Just One Year is Willem’s story, picking up where Just One Day ended. His story of their year of quiet longing and near misses is a perfect counterpoint to Allyson’s own as Willem undergoes a transformative journey, questioning his path, finding love, and ultimately, redefining himself.
