If you could travel in a Time Machine would you go back to the past or into the future?
Definitely the past! I love research and history and reading historical novels. Wouldn’t it be fun to see ancient Egypt or wave to Pharaoh during a feast day celebration along the Nile? Or dance at a ball with someone like Darcy? Or live in a castle? (Once I stayed in the haunted tower room at Borthwick castle in Scotland. It had a door to a secret tunnel . . . that castle and tunnel is now appearing in my current WIP . . . )
If you could invite any 5 people to dinner who would you choose?
Queen Ankhesenamun (King Tut’s wife/half sister) because I want to know what happened to her. She vanished without a trace soon after Tut’s death. I’m dying to know more about her. Moroni, the last prophet from the Book of Mormon – what a fascinating and sad life he led. Abraham Lincoln (read everything about him that I can ever since I was a kid). Author Elizabeth Goudge, who is one of my long-time favorite writers, and Jane Yolen, because I’d like to follow her around and see exactly how she’s managed to write more than 300 books in her lifetime.
If you were stranded on a desert island what 3 things would you want with you?
Books, Food, My Hubby!
If you could have any superpower what would you choose?
Invisibility or flying . . . it’s a toss-up . . . so I’m adding both to my current WIP . . .
What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?
Bunny Tracks: fudge, caramel, pecans – yum! With hot fudge sauce.
One food you would never eat?
Mashed potatoes. I’ve never liked them even as a kid (made me throw up) and I never will. Although octopus may be higher on the “Do Not Eat” list.
Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.
My books are magical realism with a mystery and a secret that will also get you right in your heart – and I *always* have an unexpected twist at the end that will knock your socks off.
Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?
I have another middle-grade with Scholastic coming Summer of 2014 called THE TIME OF THE FIREFLIES and Fall of 2014 is my Young Adult Debut with Harpercollins – a trilogy about belly dance and goddess temples and a delicious romance!
What inspired you to want to become a writer?
Reading fabulous books. Truly, books were very influential in my life and often my best friends. I wanted to create that same kind of magic . . . being so immersed in a book you think you’re actually living the life of the characters and cry and laugh right along with them. The kind of book you can’t put down, don’t want to end, and hug to your chest after it’s finished.
Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.
Fan Mail. The letters of the kids who write to me often make me cry.
What was your favorite book when you were a child/teen?
The Little White Horse by Elizabeth Goudge, magical realism, danger, mystery, and a British manor house all in one!
What’s one piece of advice you would give aspiring authors?
Write a LOT (keep working on new projects, don’t revise the same manuscript forever) and Don’t Give Up!
If a movie was made about your life, who would you want to play the lead role and why?’
Meryl Streep because she is so dang talented! I’m afraid my life is sorta boring for her, although very angsty!
When I was a kid I could fold my eyelids over. Very creepy and I scared a lot of family and friends. Now it hurts too much!
Pizza. I could eat it practically every day, and often do . . .
Caramel and Pecan Turtle’s!
My family, especially my older brother, called me by lots of nicknames: Kimba, Kimbo, Prim Kim, Dim Kim, etc.
If you could have a signed copy of any novel what would it be and why?
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte!
You have won one million dollars what is the first thing that you would buy?
Buy a house on the beach or a lake. Then take my whole, extended family on a fabulous trip or cruise.
What do you do in your free time?
I read, of course, and I currently have 40 books waiting for me on the floor by my bed. I love movies, taking walks, making brownies, and going to lunch with friends.
What TV show/movie/book do you watch/read that you’d be embarrassed to admit?
HART OF DIXIE – guilty pleasure!
What do you think of book trailers?
LOVE THEM! I’ve made some terrific book trailers for my own books and I honestly think they are some of the best ones out there for MG books. I had some amazing help from friends who wrote the music and did cool special effects. They’re on my website and Youtube. The one for Circle of Secrets is quite spooky and there’s a ghost hiding behind the tree in the opening images of the cover – see if you can find it!

Something readers would never guess about you
I’m a belly dancer!
Where do you write?
I’m super lucky to have a younger brother who built me a writing cottage last year!
See how cute? It’s decorated with Victorian furniture and drapes that “puddle” on the floor like wealthy people used to do to show how rich they were. Except my lace curtains came from JCPenney!
