King by R.J. Larson

Fantasy Meets the Old Testament in a Novel That Will Reach Readers of All Ages.

Against his wishes and desires, Akabe of Siphra has been chosen by his people to be King. But what does a warrior know of ruling during peacetime? Guided by the Infinite, Akabe seeks to rebuild the Temple in the city of Munra to give the sacred books of Parne a home. But dangerous factions are forming in the background. To gain the land he needs, Akabe must forsake the yearnings of his heart and instead align himself through marriage to the Thaenfall family.

Meanwhile, Kien Lantec and Ela Roeh are drawn still closer together…while becoming pawns in a quest to gain power over the region. As questions of love and faith become tangled with lies and murderous plots, each must seek the Infinite to guide them through an ever more tangled web of intrigue and danger.

Interview

If you could travel in a Time Machine would you go back to the past or into the future?

Into the past–definitely! I love history and to study it firsthand would be a dream come true–however, I wouldn’t want to live there indefinitely.

What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?

Chocolate!

If you could meet one person who has died who would you choose?

I’m presuming that this question refers to someone I love who has passed on. The answer would be, “Grandma Bonnie.” I just want to hug her again and tell her how much I love her! Grandpa Jim, Grandpa Robert, and my dear FIL and MIL would be included here if I could make this a heavenly reunion. 🙂

What is your favorite thing to eat for breakfast?

Leftovers! I’m not picky. Pizza, pasta, chicken, fruit salad–they’re all no-fuss and easy.

One food you would never eat?

It’s a beverage, actually. That brew concocted in the Amazon jungles involving all tribal members spitting into a bowl and then fermenting and and drinking the resultant libation. I. Just. Can’t.

What’s one piece of advice you would give aspiring authors?

Take advice. Particularly if you’ve heard it three or more times from industry pros regarding your own work. Yes, it sometimes hurts, but–like gold–putting your words through a fire of editing is purifying, and the end result will truly shine.

If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be?

Near a beach. Any beach! I lived near the ocean for my entire life, until thirteen years ago. Now, living in land-locked Colorado, I’m so beach-starved that it’s my dream, and I’ve never walked a beach I didn’t love.

When you were little, what did you want to be when you “grew up”?

A teacher. To quote my childhood self, “Because teachers write a lot.” You’d think I would have recognized my true calling, but….
Nickname? Missy. From my mom. Usually when I’d tested some sort of theory and landed in trouble, as in, “What ARE you doing, Missy?”

How do you react to a bad review?

They hurt. And I feel as if I’ve failed a reader. Surprisingly, my bad reviews are because I didn’t write enough about certain situations my characters have faced. Several have been because the reviewer didn’t recognize a verse I chose to amplify from the Scriptures. However, I remind myself that all reviewers are human. We all bring our own theories and preferences to each book we read.

What do you do in your free time?

I work full time and write on my days off, so free time…isn’t. But that’s okay for now. I love writing!

How did you celebrate the sale of your first book?

I went to work after receiving the news. And, we replaced our faulty garage door with my first advance check from my publisher!
Favorite smell?

Heirloom roses. They remind me of my childhood. 🙂
Favorite/most influential teacher?

It would either be John Hamlett from tenth-grade English–he excused me from finals!–or Mr. Kerr, who taught Shakespeare. Until he threatened me with the role of Juliet’s nurse. Okay, I didn’t think I was THAT disruptive in class…

What is on your “keeper shelf” of books?

My childhood Picture Bible. I loved it so much that I bought a second copy. Just in case.

TV or Movies?

Movies. I rarely have time to watch them, so when I do break down, it means I’m watching one with my family. *Loves.*

Hot or Cold?

Hot. Because Colorado seems to be icy for nine months of the year.

Black or White?

Black. White requires bleach and caution in wearing. I tend to be an absentminded slob.

Night owl, or early bird?

Night owl, married to an early bird. We’ve made it work!

Regular or Diet?

Regular. Diet tastes too chemical. Eew.

PC or Mac?

PC. My family insists that to buy a Mac would be crossing to the Dark Side, and I don’t want to go there.

Beach or Pool?

A beach beside the pool. I’d go for both in the same day.

Facebook or Twitter?

Facebook. I love extended notes with my friends!

Introvert or Extrovert?

Introverted. However, my INTJ personality draws me toward people. I can’t remain isolated for too long.

Things you have in your purse/bag/wallet now

Car keys, mini-notebook, pens, phone, lipsticks, a tape measure, and anything my guys have added to the mix. I carry anything except food that might turn poisonous, thereby harming a loved one. Oh. And money. I rarely have money. The last time I had a twenty dollar bill of my very own…was about five months ago. I think I panicked.
