I Am A Reader, Not A Writer’s 3rd Blogoversary Giveaway

Wow I was just thinking it had been about 3 years since I started this blog and clicked through to my very first post to see when I made it –  June 14, 2010.  I started this blog simply so I could sign up for ARC tours.  I never dreamed it would become what it did.  I eventually developed some blogging “goals” and have long since exceeded everything I ever imagined doing.

It’s been an amazing 3 years!  I’ve learned a lot and made some amazing friends.

As much as I have LOVED blogging I just can’t keep up and honestly don’t want to anymore.  What was once fun has become overwhelming.  I receive 200+ blog related emails every day and dozens of review request each week.  I rarely have any time to read and have come to hate to writing reviews.  It is definitely time to take a break and reevaluate things.

There will be lots of changes for the future of this blog.

Giveaway Hops

I am only planning on hosting a few giveaway hops from here on out.  They are very time consuming and I’m burned out.  I am more than happy to help promote hops for other bloggers as long as they have a “family friendly only” stipulation in their rules.  I will put up a post such as these so other bloggers know about them.

Blog Tours & Book Blasts

Also slowing down on the number of Tours & Blasts I host.  I hate having to say no but I have had to start turning authors away.  I had weeks where I had 5 or 6 tours/blasts starting and it has become more than I can handle.  From here on out I’m planning to just do 1 or 2 each week.  I wish I could help every author who writes a good clean book promote their work but I’m just one person and just can’t do it.

Know Me Better, Got Great Giveaways & Feed My Reader Friday are not going to be returning anytime soon.   I don’t want to “have to” put up posts on certain days.  I want to go on vacation and sleep in and not have to stay up late to be sure something goes up on time.

Book Reviews

Anyone notice this “book review” blog hasn’t had a review posted in a long time… I got totally burned out and haven’t read much and reviewed even less.  I have finally started reading again and hope the reviews will follow soon… but remember I Am A READER, Not A WRITER.  Book reviews require writing…something I don’t love to do but hope to find time to tackle soon.

I hope to still be blogging 3 years from now but on a much slower, more manageable schedule.

A huge thanks to everyone who has supported this blog!!

To celebrate my 3rd Blogoversary I’m giving away a BIG Mystery Box of Books or a $25 Amazon Gift Card or Paypal Cash.

The Box of Books is open to US only, the Gift Card or Paypal Cash is open Internationally.

Ends 7/4/13

  1. I recently finished reading Calling Me Home by Julie Kibler and loved it.

  2. Congrats on your 3 years! And I feel ya…I started my blog 3 years ago in May and I’ve noticed a decline in reviews. And I always fall behind on writing reviews, too (I’ve got like 6 lined up right now that I need to write =/).

But congrats nonetheless! We can do it! lol

  3. You are so awesome, Kathy, I’m not going to enter. I’ll just spread the word for you. 🙂 You’ve done cyberspace and the book blogging world a great service over these three years. HEARTS!

    • I SO agree, Sa, and Kathy, I am going to miss all of it, but I TRULY understand. You deserve to have more time for your family, too. I’m still going to miss seeing you all the time! I have to say that I NEVER knew HOW you did it! Then you had started the Book Blasts! WOW! With 5 kids, too! You have GOT to have an understanding husband! Even then, wow!
You take your time doing whatever it is YOU want to do in life and HOW YOU want to do it, be it blogging or your family, anything! YOU are the one who calls the shots in your own life, and we only get 1 chance at it! I’m VERY happy for your decision for YOU! Besides, isn’t that what blogging should be about? Do it when you want to do it, etc., etc.!
Congrats on the anniversary! Like you said, we’ll see MORE anniversaries! Just the blog will be different! Take care of YOU first!
Sending a MILLION blessings your way!

  4. I just hosted book group at my house tonight and of course the wind was blowing like crazy! I’m glad my ladies were brave and still sat through it.

  8. I think at a certain point you think to yourself…is this work or fun? Then you have to make sure it is the latter. Happy 3 years. You have made an impact in blogland. 🙂

  9. Congratulations on blogging for 3 years! Yes, it is work all that you have done and you certainly do need to just relax and read some more-after all that is what you really love to do. I have trouble saying no to authors as well–but am slowly learning. I am sure you will recoup your strength soon and hopefully will be back if only with some reviews!!

  10. Congrats!! I love reading all of your posts! Here’s to many more years to come …

  84. Congrats on 3yrs!! Thank you for being so open and honest with us about how things are going for you. I have often thought about doing the blog route for ARC’s and what not but with a full-time job, a part-time job and a small business, I wasn’t sure how it would work. I am now convinced it wouldn’t work in my life at this time. I appreciate you sharing cause it helps and I wish you a refreshing new blog approach.

  85. Cathy P says:

Congrats on your 3rd Blogoversary! It doesn’t seem possible that it’s been 3 years. Thanks for the giveaway!

  86. I actually can’t believe it has only been three years! I do get how busy your blog has been. I really do not know how you have done all that you’ve been doing, so good for you deciding to slow things down. I just started my blog this year, but I’m hoping to keep an easy pace, otherwise it won’t be fun anymore and I really love reading and sharing books so that’s what I want to continue to be able to do. 🙂 I hope you have a great summer!

Congratulations on your three year blogoversary! Your blog is one of the first ones I started following when I discovered the online book community and I have loved checking my email everyday to see what you have posted. Thank you for all of your hared work!

  97. Happy 3rd Bloggoversary! Wish you all the best!
Sadly the box of books is US Only, but I know the shipping price is the devil ;p

  98. I recently needed to re-evaluate and cut back as well so I totally understand. I hope you get everything to a manageable level soon. Congrats on 3 years!

  99. Anita Yancey says:

Happy Blogoversary! The best book I’ve read lately is Evidence Of Life by Barbara Taylor.

  100. I know what you mean. I have lost my blog focus and hope to get it back. I want to move to short quick hits about books instead of long involved reviews. I want more time to read and purchase books for the library. You are helping me see this is what happens sometimes.

  101. Angela (: says:

    Huge congratulations!! Happy third Blogoversary!!!

  102. Tiffany Drew says:

Happy Blogoversary, Kathy! I hope you have a fantastic summer, thank you for all that you do for this blog and others. You’re the best 🙂

  103. Congrats on three years (: Hope you have fun reading !
The best book I’ve read recently was probably THE ETERNITY CURE by Julie Kagawa, totally rocked ~

  104. June M. says:

Happy Blogoversary! Hopefully this summer (next month) I will finally get my diability approved and settled once and for all. Considering that my two doctors (one general, one for my back) have labeled me diabled for different reasons, I really don’t see any way around it.

  105. Happy Blogoversary! I’m still in awe of how you manage to do everything! 🙂

  106. lkish77123 says:

Happy Blogiversary. I could never figure out how you fit everything in in one day. I thought you must be wonder woman. You deserve a break and to slow your pace. And, to enjoy your family more. We will still be here to catch what morsels you send to us.

  108. Happy Blogoversary!! From all these comments, I’d say you and your blog are well loved even if you slow the pace a bit. Good for you!

Happy Blogoversary I wish you the best and many more years thanks for this great givaway!

  112. Congrats on 3 years of blogging! I really enjoy your blog and appreciate all you put into it!!!!

  113. I totally understand what you mean. I haven’t been blogging for nearly as long as you, but I get super burnt out sometimes. I’ve been just a step away from quitting all together, actually. I hope you enjoy being able to step back a bit. Hang in there! (:

  114. I had the best day with my family at a local amusement park! Just read Lost and Found by Nicole Williams and loved it! She is definitely one of my favorite authors! Thanks for the chance to win!

  115. You go GIRL! I’m with you.
I love your blog and I feel the same way you do (I’m a Reader,Not a Writer), which is why I don’t have a blog. I love to read but writing a review is like turning in a book report back in high school (I hated it). I loved English class and reading the books, but hated the book reports. I leave a review once in a while and I always try to rate the book regardless. And I know most authors hate it if you leave a rating and no review, its hard for me to review a book without spoiling the book for others. It goes back to high school book reports, what, where, when and why etc…so I am at a loss at writing reviews.

  116. Congrats! I really enjoy your blog. Thanks for all of your hard work.

  117. I love reading, but I wish Camelia Net (online book borrowing through library) would lend me a book for longer than 2 weeks. Even with audiobooks, I’m such a slow reader! I want to soak up every detail because I love reading so much!

  118. congrats on the anniversary!!! Bleh… thunderstorm nows 🙁

  119. Cindy Macbeth says:

I’ve been really lucky lately almost every book I have read I have enjoyed.
The Maisie Dobb’s series by Jacquline Winspear
Myron Bolitar series by Harlan Coben
The Blessing of the Animals by Katrina Kittle
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer
The Elephant Keep by Christopher Nicholson
Always on the look out for good books.
Books are such a wonderful escape from everyday life.

  120. Happy blog birthday to you! I totally understand the cutting back. I’ve often wondered how you do what you do. I’m another one who takes on too much and I’ve been scaling back myself. I hope your new plans for blogging (and reading) will help keep you out of the burn out. 🙂

Recommendation for you…best book I’ve read recently was Murder as a Fine Art by David Morrell. An excellent historical thriller/mystery. Have you read it?

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  121. I am amazed at how much you do all the time! You are totally allowed a break! 🙂

  122. jeanette sheets says:

Happy 3rd Blogoversary! Your blog was the first one I started following when I found the whole blogging community! And I definitely understand about being burn out, you deserve a break.

  124. The books I’ve recently read have been kinda blah, so I’m excited for my next round – The Spectacular Now, Code Name Verity, and Starcrossed! I have high expectations, but I think these books will rise to the occasion 😀

  125. Julia Rain says:

Congrats! I can understand getting burned out. I hope you take your time and come back to just do what makes you happy. Thanks for all you’ve done and are doing!

  126. I am not just going to leave some random thought on your anniversary post! I have been following you for what is going on two years now. I try to enter every giveaway and be a part of every hop. I was a reader and now I have a blog of my own…..you inspire me. I started off as one of those product review blogs, but that’s not me! Thanks for being an inspiration to us that simply just want to be about BOOKS!

    Becca Wilson

  127. Dear Kathy,

Congrats on your blogoversary. You have an amazing blog – on so many different levels. I have been following you for well over a year quite frankly in awe of what you do. I sincerely hope that you have a lovely summer filled with much READING. I can really appreciate how you must really want to just read with no pressure to pump out a review – doesn’t that sound delicious!? Take care of yourself and enjoy what you do. 🙂

  128. Wow! Three years – congrats! I can’t imagine the dedication you’ve put into making your blog so fantastic. (I can relate a little about how it cuts into reading time, though; this is just my 3rd month of blogging, and my time for reading is about half what it was before I blogged.) Enjoy your summer, and thanks for your inspiration to your readers who became bloggers themselves.

  129. Happy 3rd Year Blogoversary! I love you blog and I have often wondered to myself, how in the world you keep up will all you have going with you blog and family. It seems to me that you have well earned a vacation and a break from blogging. Best wishes!

  130. Happy Blogoversary, Kathy!
3 years and you make your blog so wonderful. I’ve made my blog since 2011 but….. forget it :p

  131. Ashfa Anwer says:

    Happy Blogoversary!

  132. I’ve been reading Ann Radcliffe’s Mysteries of Udolpho, and it amused me that the Castle Udolpho doesn’t even make its first appearance until the second volume. You just have to love that late eighteenth-century pacing. 😀

  133. Thanks for the giveaway!!!

The weather is awful in Spain… I hate sunny days 🙁

  134. Mary Preston says:

    3 years is fantastic.

  135. I love Reading so I love your blog!

  136. Peggy Hopkins says:

A smile a day keeps the grumpies away.

  137. Kathy, congrats on the 3 year mark. I just wanted to say you have to be one of the hardest working book bloggers out there! In fact, I’ve unsubscribed from the vast majority of the other blogs I was subscribed to because you pretty much cover everything. So thank you for all your hard work. I’ve always been a bit amazed. And I totally feel you. I hit the same spot with my blogging almost two years ago and it’s just now that I’m feeling like I’m ready to get back to it and have figured out a way that it will work for me. For me that means book blogging is going to be only a small part of what I blog about (I’m moving more towards lifestyle blogging with books thrown in) and being VERY selective about who I choose to work with. It is hard to have to turn people away, but being more satisfied with what you are putting out there and not feeling like a slave to the blog is completely worth it. And even two years after stating I was taking a break and almost as long since I’ve posted pretty much anything on my blog, I still get book blog related emails nearly every day and frankly quite a few review copies show up unannounced on my doorstep. I don’t feel guilty about not getting to them at all anymore though. And THAT is the gift. I guess what I’m trying to say is thank you for all you’ve done…but I’m glad you are taking some time to re-evaluate and figure out what works best from you. When it’s not fun anymore….something has to change. Best of luck and I look forward to seeing where this adventure takes you. Happy READING!!

  138. Happy 3rd Blogoversary! 🙂 hope you have an awesome one 😉

  139. Happy Blogoversary and congrats!

  140. I am tired and it’s going to be another hot one out there. Sadly it’s not even officially summer yet so the hot temps haven’t really even started. :-/ We’ve been putting in a ton of time at the pool the last couple weeks.

Happy Blogoversary and thank you for hosting a giveaway in celebration of it!!

  141. congrats on three years blogging!! thank you for the contest!

Right now, I’m reading You don’t have to say you love me by Sarra Maning and just loving it.
It’s a fun and inspirational book. And so much more.
I hope in another 3 years you are still going strong, still changing the landscape of book blogs.
All of u have changed the way the Book Industry perceive readers as passive and totally unaware of their marketing devices. In some cases, u change them for good.
    So, thank you all.

  178. Chalain says:

Hooray for three years!! I admire you for choosing to find more balance between this blog and life. Good for you! Thanks so much for what you do. I love reading your blog. 🙂

  179. Happy 3rd Blogaversary! I love reading any kind of paranormal romance.

  180. Stephanie Hirsch says:

3 years is a really long time to be blogging. I’ve always tried to keep up my blog, and have failed miserably at it. I started a job and between that and my taking care of the kids and the house and the husband, I just didn’t have time anymore. I still enjoy reviewing a book here or there, but mostly its on Goodreads. Either way, congratulations on 3 awesome years!

  181. Denise Z says:

Happy Blogoversary! I am amazed at all you have accomplished and so respect the fact that you are able to step back and say where is the fun? I wish you every joy in the coming year and every success with the changes you are making. I have appreciated following and look forward to this new path to follow.

  182. Joana Bento says:

I’m currently reading the book From the Earth to the Moon by Jules Verne

  183. so hot here today and dreaming of cool beaches…
thank you for a lovely giveaway!!

  184. had a macdonalds breakfast this morning! that was pretty good lol

  185. I understand how you feel. That’s why my blog isn’t my main life. You were incredibly busy with your blog. You had posts all the time. I am not surprised you got burnt out. I hope you don’t ever completely give it up because I love your blog, but I understand needing to take a break and not post as much. Congratulations on making it three years!

I’m also not a fan of writing reviews. I could write a book report on what I read, but that’s different than a review as a review isn’t supposed to be a spoiler. I do it, because I want to share what I’ve read with others. I just don’t do it as fast as I should.

  186. Gabriela says:

I have been told the Game of Thrones series is good, but I don’t know why I can’t bring myself to read them. I have watched the show and I feel that if I read them it would change my reaction to the show which I am very attached to right now.

  187. Nikki O says:

Congrats on 3 years! I don’t remember how long I’ve been following you for but it’s definitely half of your blogging career at least.

I so understand where you’re coming from. I have a tiny speck of a blog and I get so lazy sometimes I don’t updates for months. So do take some times for yourself. It’s not a full-time job for everyone.

Thanks for thinking of us anyway! Hope you’ll stick around. I’ll be right here.

  188. Stephanie Grant says:

Congrats on the three year anniversary! Here is to many many more! I have really enjoyed coming to your blog at least once a week and many weeks it was more than that 🙂

  189. I can completely understand what you’re experiencing because I’ve gone through so many times the last few months. Sometimes reviews come easy to me but most of the time I just don’t want to write at all. I just want to read and move on to the next book, which is what I’ve been doing. Then what happens is I have 5 or 6 reviews to right, ugh. It’s overwhelming the number of requests and you just want to help, so it gets hard to say no. Anywho, congrats on 3 years and hopefully you’ll be here for many more. Rest up!

  190. Congratulations on your 3 years. I completely understand why you would want to slow down. I hope it makes you happy! Thank you for the giveaway.

  191. Happy Blogoversary! 😀 I have only been at the blogging game for a month and have yet to really be overwhelmed. I can see how it can start to get that way. I do subscribe to practically every book blog I can find in support of my book blogging buddies, so I have numerous emails I have to go through as well each day. Most of them are just to comment on others blogs in hopes of helping them out with active followers. I have always admired your site. In see your blog name in almost every hop or tour I see so I know how hard you’ve worked on this site. Job well done.

  192. Congrats on your 3rd blogoversary! Quite the accomplishment. I hope I make it that long. Best wishes in all your future projects!

  193. someluckydog says:
