Amy Misakonis created The Best Place for Me, her first book, for parents to convey a special message to their little ones: Right here with you, is the best place for me.

Amy lives in Annapolis, Maryland with her one year old son. He has been the inspiration for her first two books. Each of Amy’s story express, in words and playful images, all of the important things that we, as parents, want our babies to know. How much we love them, and how very important they are.

Interview

If you could travel in a Time Machine would you go back to the past or into the future?

I’m torn on this one!  Can I go the Marty McFly route and do both, maybe go back to the future?  I’d love to visit the past, take part in the roaring 20’s or see my parents and grandparents as they were growing up, to learn more about their life and who they were before they became parents themselves.  I’d also like to visit the future, to see the person that my son becomes, see what wonderful things the world holds for him.

What is one book everyone should read?

Since I’m in picture book mode, I think everyone should read:  Wherever You Are, My Love Will Find You, by Nancy Tillman.  Not only are the illustrations fantastic, but the message is heartwarming.  No matter where your travels take you, no matter what you do, there is someone in the world who loves you.

If you could have any superpower what would you choose?

There are so many that I would want!  To fly, read minds, stop time, all top the charts, but if I had to pick just one, I would choose the power to heal.

Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.

Because in that moment, when your baby or child has just fallen asleep in your arms, and your heart is filled with so much love, you’re heart says quietly:  Right here with you is the best place for me, there’s no place, my sweet baby, that I’d rather be.

Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?

Yes, in June I’ll be releasing my second picture book, My Wish For You. This book has been one of my favorite projects. It’s a collection of wishes that every parent holds for their children, but at the very end the most important wish is revealed… You’ll have to read it to know what it is!  I’ve also been working on two future books that I hope to publish before the end of this year.

What inspired you to want to become a writer?

Writing a book was on my list of 30 things to do before 30. Well, I’m 33 now, so I’m not that far behind! I originally envisioned myself as a J.K Rowling type (after I watched a Lifetime movie about her life!), but it turns out that Dr. Suess might be more my style. One night, as I was rocking my son to sleep, the ideas just began to flow. I’d whisper the verses to him while he slept. Nearly every other night, a new idea would pop into my head. He has been my inspiration, and I want him to be proud of me and to show him that it’s never too late to follow a dream.

If you could jump in to a book and live in that world, which would it be?

Definitely Harry Potter.

What movie and/or book are you looking forward to this year?

Two movies come to mind quickly. I listened to Silver Linings Playbook on my way to and from work for a few weeks and have been waiting to see it for so long. As a single mommy, I don’t get to go to the movies much so I’m waiting for it to be available on demand. Another movie that I can’t wait to see is the Great Gatsby. I’ll definitely be getting a babysitter for that one.

Something your readers would never guess about you

That I always wanted to be an astronaut growing up. I saw the movie Space Camp, and that was the end of me. I went to a school called Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, got my bachelors in Aerospace Engineering and went to work on the space shuttle for many years.

Happiest moment in your life so far

The birth of my son. I’ve never felt a love like that.

If you could leave this world for your “book world,” would you?

My book world is my real world!  That’s the best thing about this life.  I get to turn the things I see and feel into a world that I can share with everyone.  Life’s full of hills and valleys and good or bad, it’s an amazing adventure.
