I graduated from Brigham Young University with a BA in Humanitites. I am a member of the SCBWI and the PNWA. I write middle grade and YA fantasy. My first book, The Emerald Ring, will be published in 2013 by Cedar Fort Books.
If you could have any superpower what would you choose?
I would want the ability to heal. I’ve always wanted to make people feel better. Second choice, I’d like to fly. I would visit all the places around the world that I’ve read so much about.
Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.
It is a unique story idea with spunky characters that will keep you reading till the very end, and craving the next book.
Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?
Right now I am working on Book 3 in the Cleopatra’s Legacy Series. The tentative title is The Diamond Looking Glass. I am about 2/3 of the way down with my first draft.
The second book in the series, The Ruby Pendant, is finished. I am crossing my fingers that Cedar Fort will pick it up. They are waiting to see how The Emerald Ring does first.
What inspired you to want to become a writer?
From the time I was little I would create stories in my head, sort of like daydreams. My best friends would then be “blessed” lol, to hear them. After I had several children, I just decided it was time to write them down.
If you could jump in to a book and live in that world, which would it be?
I don’t have a specific book, but it would be one with magic and probably elves.
What was your favorite book when you were a child/teen?
When I was younger I loved the Narnia series, the Mary Poppins books. When I got older it was Dragon Lance and The Forgotten Realms.
Is there a song you could list as the theme song for your book or any of your characters?
Actually, I have to write in silence. If I’m lucky, the kids are playing and I am writing. Sometimes I find myself humming Church hymns or Barney songs though.
What’s one piece of advice you would give aspiring authors?
Don’t give up. Most of the writers I know took at least 8 years to get their first book published, and I am no exception. Along with that, be patient. The publishing world takes a long time. I know editors who say their return time for a query is 2 years!
When you were little, what did you want to be when you “grew up”?
I always wanted to be a teacher. I even studied secondary education at BYU. I did everything required except the 6 months of student teaching. By then, my husband and I were graduating and thinking about starting a family, which we did.
If you were a super hero what would your kryptonite be?
Donuts- especially raspberry filled or maple bars.
If you weren’t a human, what would you be?
Elf- with magic and ranger skills.
Do you write as you go or do you have the book all planned out from page 1?
I have a story idea in mind from the beginning, but I write as I go. Planning it out ruins all the fun for me.
How do you come up with the characters names/personalities?
Here’s a secret… Many of my characters get their names from my awesome friends from high school. The personalities are each characters alone, and not based on real people.
This or That
TV or Movies?
Both! Blockbusters on the big screen though.
Hot or Cold?
I like warm weather, but an air conditioner is a MUST.
Black or White?
Well, my last name is White, but, both. There has to be both.
Night owl, or early bird?
Print or Ebook?
Coke or Pepsi?
Action or Drama?
Harry Potter or Twilight?
Harry Potter and then Twilight.
Gum or Breath Mints?
Shoes or Sandals?
No shoes or sandals! I’m a bare feet kindof girl.
