Dead Silence by Kimberly Derting

Violet thought she’d made peace with her unique ability to sense the echoes of the dead and the imprints that cling to their killers…that is until she acquired an imprint of her own. Forced to carry a reminder of the horrible events of her kidnapping, Violet is more determined than ever to lead a normal life. However, the people who run the special investigative team Violet works for have no intention of letting her go.

When someone close to Violet becomes a suspect in a horrific murder, she finds herself pulled into a deadly hunt for a madman with an army of devoted followers. Violet has survived dangerous situations before, but she quickly discovers that protecting those closest to her is far more difficult than protecting herself.

The Body Finder series has been praised as a “delectable blend of mystery and romance” (The Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books), a “fast-paced, compelling read” (ALA Booklist), and as “imaginative, convincing, and successful suspense” (Kirkus Reviews). With a perfect blend of romance, intrigue, and suspense, Dead Silence continues this gripping series, delivering unexpected twists that will keep readers guessing until the very last page.

Interview

Craziest thing you ever ate?
When I was little, my mom used to make cow tongue…and sadly, we actually ate it!
One food you would never eat?
Cow tongue. Seriously, never again!
Favorite Candy?
Plain M&Ms, preferably mixed in hot popcorn! (The trick is to heat the M&Ms before combining them with the popcorn.)
What is your guilty pleasure?
Reality TV. I love the Kardashians!
Favorite quote from a movie?
“I want my two dollars!” Better Off Dead, 1985. (Yeah, I’m not that deep.)
If you were stranded on a desert island what 3 things would you want with you?
Toothbrush, sleeping bag, and a book titled BUILDING BOATS FOR DUMMIES.
What is one book everyone should read?
TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD
When you were little, what did you want to be when you “grew up”?
When I was in the sixth grade, I wanted to be a “foxy lady trucker.” Thankfully, I traded that dream for “writer” and never looked back!
If a movie was made about your life, who would you want to play the lead role and why?
Either David Spade or Reese Witherspoon, because they’re both short, blonde, and funny.
How did you know you should become an author?
I’ve pretty much known I wanted to be a writer since the 7thgrade when I took journalism as my elective credit. Of course back then, I had big dreams of becoming a world famous jet-setting journalist covering wars and famines. When I was older, and realized what being a real journalist entailed (living in tents without showers, malaria, facing gunfire), I realized that writing books from the safety of my home would be a little less…dangerous, and a lot more clean!

What drew you to writing this genre?
I was writing YA before I knew I was writing YA.  The main character in my first book was 16 years old but I thought it was an adult horror novel.  I think I’m drawn to teen characters because everything they experience is so surface-level. Every day is the best day they’ve had or the worst day.  Things are new and more exciting.  They’re just less jaded than most adults.
Give us a glimpse into a typical day in your day starting when you wake up till you lie down again.
I’m not sure any day is particularly “typical” for me. I usually start checking my email very early in the morning, and after that, I generally get sidetracked by Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest—anything that seems like a shiny distraction. I try to rein it in within the hour and get started with whatever project I’m working on at the moment. Before I had an office with a lock, I would write in the kitchen, so chaos doesn’t really bother me. All I really need is my laptop, some comfy sweatpants, copious amounts of tea, and candy (preferably Skittles).
While I’m drafting, I don’t usually make many notes. Mostly I just plow through to make sure I have the plot (and all the major plot points) down. It’s usually during the second draft that I have to make some sort of timeline and start making elaborate notes about the characters so I don’t mix up the details. Because I’m fairly visual, I keep a giant whiteboard in my office to keep track of everything. And, of course, I count on my editors to catch any glaring errors I might have made along the way.
Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?
I’m working on a super secret project right now that I’m hoping to announce very, very soon! I cannot tell you how excited I am about it!!! Except, I guess I just did.
