Guest Post: A Clean Read for Family and Teachers

Who reads in your family and what do they read the most?

My husband reads A LOT! His favorite genre is fantasy.

My father-in-law loves sci-fi.

My mother-in-law devours books, reading anything and everything.

My mom reads spiritual books, self-help and how-to books.

I read fiction and a lot more non-fiction when a book pertains to what I’m working on at the moment. None of us have read 50 Shades of Grey

After seeing the early teens we know with their heads glued to Twilight, I wanted to write something that was clean without vampires or werewolves. Fun, Funny, and Informative.

In order to write for the whole family and the kids we know, I decided to write a Fantasy Sci-Fi loaded with spiritual principals, other worlds and bigger words!

Wearing Many Hats

I wear many hats. I even collect hats. So it was only fitting that the hero in my fantasy series makes magical hats.

One of the hats I’ve worn in my life was as Safe Side Superchick in the Safe Side series created by Baby Einstein’s Julie Clark. After playing the superhero role dedicated to keeping kids safe, I began to be recognized by kids – everywhere.

They would spot me in grocery stores, at restaurants, and on airplanes. Watching a young child search their brain for why I looked familiar and then to recognize me was hilarious and fun. I even had a young girl come up to me at a restaurant.

            Hey, you’re Safe Side Superchick!

            Why yes, I am!

Would you come to my school and be my show-and-tell?

How could I resist that one? Of course I said yes.

I love visiting schools. I’ve done it quite a few times. Not only was I able to help teach kids and adults to keep kids safe, teachers, and their work fascinated me.

Helping Teachers

While I was having a blast creating a line of characters to cover every word A to Z and working on the poetic language of the book – I wanted it to read like a song – I sought the help of teachers.

I went to my local elementary teachers and asked them what they wanted and needed most in books for a variety of age groups.

Larger vocabulary was at the top of the list. Fun clean reads were a close second. Inspiring kids who were insecure was another huge request.

Making Everyone Happy

So… The Adventures of Tilda Pinkerton sings from the pages with very large words that are fun, funny and informative. She goes on adventures that are action packed, making the reader’s brain work a bit but with nothing that makes you cringe. And the great Tilda Pinkerton happens to be the most insecure of all. The thing that she is most insecure about happens to be the very thing that saves the day, and the planet!

Of course you’ll never make everyone happy. But it’s fun to try. I gave the book to a friend of the family who was going on twelve. I thought it was perfect for her. When I asked what she thought about The Adventures of Tilda Pinkertonshe said:

It’s a very imaginative book. I really liked it. The words are great. But there’s nothing inappropriate in it. I’m reading Twilight

You win some. You lose some. And you keep writing.

The Adventures of Tilda Pinkerton

Somewhere out in the Sombrero Galaxy, Tilda Pinkerton–mystical maker of mysterious, magnificent, magical hats–is being hunted by the Keeper of Darkness. Yet Tilda simply does not recall, at all, after taking a tremendous fall. No one on Ooleeoo, where Tilda crash-landed, knows she is from another planet. Only Star Jumper Randy can tell her—but he’s light years away, frantically searching for his missing love, desperate that without her, the entire galaxy soon may be lost. Even in the middle of cosmic danger, Tilda loves to create hats, for which she has a rare and uncanny knack. All who receive them sparkle, in fact—and spark their innermost talent. With a Tilda hat, people can suddenly do whatever they dream of, causing brilliant ideas to grow madly. With Gladys the toad, who thinks she’s a cat, and Frank the fish, who lives in her hat, Tilda must discover who she is and what her enemy wants from her so badly. But the Mayor of Moodle has other plans, including a ban on all wearing of hats, everywhere on Ooleeoo. His dark and forbidding actions seem to coincide with something unworldly, threatening all with a nameless dread and slowly blacking out the sky. With Ooleeoo itself turning upside down, how can anyone survive? In this first in a series of Tilda Pinkerton adventures, Tilda must fight the battle of her life and risk all—even the galaxy and stars—by revealing her most electrifying secret.
