Blog Tour Kick Off – A Shimmer of Angels by Lisa M. Basso plus Giveaway

Welcome to Author Lisa M. Basso

Lisa M. Basso was born and raised in San Francisco, California. She is a lover of books, video games, animals, and baking (not baking with animals though). As a child she would crawl into worlds of her own creation and get lost for hours. Her love for YA fiction started with a simple school reading assignment: S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders. When not reading or writing she can usually be found at home with The Best Boyfriend that Ever Lived ™ and her two darling (and sometimes evil) cats, Kitties A and B. Lisa M. Basso is available for quotes, signings, video or podcast appearances, and all opportunities relative to A SHIMMER OF ANGELS.

A SLITHER OF HOPE, Book 2 in the ANGEL SIGHT series will be available from Month9Books in February 2014!

If you could travel in a Time Machine would you go back to the past or into the future?

A TARDIS? I’m so there! Hmmm. Past or future? I’m a firm believer that no one should know what the future holds. It defeats the purpose of living in the moment. Plus, I’m a big history buff, so I’d go back and watch some of history’s greatest moments unfold. Then write about them.

If you could invite any 5 people to dinner who would you choose?

Barack Obama, Edgar Allen Poe, J.K. Rowling, Holly Black, and Maggie Stiefvater. It would be quite the interesting dinner party, no?

If you were stranded on a desert island what 3 things would you want with you?
One: Now this might be cheating (a little bit) but my ereader packed with books. Two: My boyfriend. Three: my laptop with an unlimited battery supply (that exists in real life, right?).

What is one book everyone should read?

I am in love with S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders. It was the first book I really fell in love with and our love affair has never ended. I read The Outsiders all the time. It started as an assigned read for school, but I devoured it and cried and wiped my tears and started writing my own stories shortly after.

One food you would never eat?

Bananas! Bleh. This one really sends people for a loop. I’ve never liked those evil yellow things, even as a baby. Thinking of them is making me shiver. Just the smell of them turns my stomach. The funny part, I love banana nut bread. I just can’t make it myself. Go figure.

Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?

I’m currently finishing up book two in the Angel Sight series titled A SLITHER OF HOPE. So far this book has been nothing but a roller coaster ride for me. Let’s hope you all feel the same way when it comes out 😉

What inspired you to want to become a writer?

Reading great books. I loved getting lost in the characters and their worlds so much, I decided to try it for myself. I’ve been writing ever since and I’ve never looked back.

If you could jump in to a book and live in that world, which would it be?

Without a doubt, Harry Potter. I’d go to Hogwarts and give Hermione a run for her money with my love of school. Maybe I’d even get a time-turner, too.

What was your favorite book when you were a child/teen?

S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders. It’s still one of my top three to this day. I could talk about how fantastic this book was for me in ninth grade for hours. It was one of the first books that really touched me deep enough to spark emotion.

What’s one piece of advice you would give aspiring authors?

Persistence. Never give up. Find yourself a great critique partner to share your highs and lows with, and keep pushing forward, keep writing, keep improving. Eventually, you’ll get where you were meant to go.

What is your favorite Quote?
I wish I could write as mysterious as a cat.” -Edgar Allen Poe.

I love cats, mystery, and Poe. What can I say, this is a sweet, simple homerun for me.

Can you see yourself in any of your characters?

I see a little of myself in Ray, the insecure klutz. That’s me. I’m also so the nerdy part of Lee, and I have a little of Cam’s intensity and Kade’s inappropriate humor.

What’s the craziest writing idea you’ve had?

I can’t really share than yet because it’s on the back burner in the form of a super secret WIP, but here’s a hint: it involves a world in shambles, a torrid love affair, and some seriously cool supernatural elements (that I can’t share. Arg! I’m so sorry!).

What’s the best advice anyone has ever given you?

Kill. Your. Darlings. Now, this doesn’t necessarily mean kill off all your characters, it means don’t be afraid of the harder cuts. Remove that scene that isn’t quite working, paste it into a blank Word doc, and forget about it. Rewrite the entire scene with new goals and motivations in mind. Even if you loved the scene before, you may be surprised by how much you’ve improved it with rewriting.

What movie and/or book are you looking forward to this year?

Oh, do not get me started. The list is so long that I really should start to write some of my wishlist down one of these days. For now, let’s say Catching Fire and Beautiful Creatures (for movies). For books, there are some amazing debuts and new series by established authors releasing this year, not to mention continuations of some of my favorite series. There are too many to list, but be sure my shelves will be filled with so much YA this year. So. Much!

If you were a super hero what would your kryptonite be?
That would be a toss-up between dessert and video games. Put a warm cookie sundae in front of a Playstation 3 controller and I’m stick a fork in me because I’m done.

What do you do in your free time?
When I’m not writing or reading, I can be found playing the latest Call of Duty or Lego titles, oh and don’t forget the zombies. I’ll play anything with zombie slaying. Plus, I’m a pretty damn good baker, if I do say so myself. Baking helps relax me almost as much as pulling the trigger on a camping noob.

How did you celebrate the sale of your first book?

I signed my contract for A SHIMMER OF ANGELS almost a year ago. To celebrate, I went out to a great dinner with my boyfriend, my dad, and my uncle. I’m planning on upping that for the A SHIMMER OF ANGELS release day. Attending a party at The Academy of Sciences with my honey then off to a romantic dinner.

How long do you generally let a story idea ‘marinate’ in your brain before you start the book?
As long as it takes. It really depends on getting to know the characters in your head, their world, and how much research needs to be done before hand. I’d say anywhere between a month and a year.

Something your readers would never guess about you?
Before I became a writer, I was sort of a woman of all trades. I’ve been a rental car agent (driving Corvettes and Porches around the streets of downtown San Francisco), a certified massage therapist, and an eternal college student (taking almost every class offered before they kicked me out with a degree).

This or That

TV or Movies?

TV (only because, to me, TV feels more like books, where you have more time to get to know the characters and really feel like they’re real)

Black or White?

Black (I wear it almost every day)

Chocolate or Vanilla?

Vanilla (Mmm…now I’m getting hungry)

Horror or Romance?

Romance (swoony romance)

Sweet or Salty?

Sweet (anything sweet, really)

A Shimmer of Angels

Sixteen-year-old Rayna sees angels, and has the medication and weekly therapy sessions to prove it. Now, in remission, Rayna starts fresh at a new school, lands a new job, and desperately tries for normalcy. She ignores signs that she may be slipping into the world she has tried so hard to climb out of. But these days, it’s more than just hallucinations that keep Rayna up at night. Students are dying, and she may be the only one who can stop it. Can she keep her job, her sanity, and her friends from dying at the hands of angels she can’t admit to seeing?
