Interview

If you were not a writer, what would you like to do?
I find it hard to call myself a writer. I have always enjoyed writing, been driven to tell stories, and I love to put the pen to paper. I have always had to pay the bills, make ends meet, and do the “responsible” thing by going to the office from 8-5 on a daily basis. The idea of becoming a writer, to call myself an author, is the dream which I have desired to achieve. So the thing I would like to do is to write, and to travel the world while doing so…

Which of your characters is a portrayal of you?
In this story the two brothers, Adam and Avery, are both fragments of my own personality. In fact I would say that I have splintered off a piece of myself into many of the characters. The Stranger, the mysterious character who plays only a small part in this first book, is heavily influenced by my character. And that is part of why I keep him hidden for the most part. I don’t want to give away everything just yet! However, even the princess shares many of my own character traits… Though she is much more brave and daring.

Favorite places to travel?
I never liked traveling for most of my life. I was unaware of just how amazing the world was outside of my limited view. Once I started traveling it changed everything… Especially once I had the tremendous opportunity to visit Thailand. There is no place in the world quite like it. Deep, mysterious jungles, the bustling, wild metropolis city of Bangkok, and the otherworldly beaches that stun the senses. Most remarkable is that the people of Thailand make sure it lives up to it’s reputation as the “land of smiles.” Go there. I promise you won’t regret it.

Describe your book in 5 words.
Two brothers, adventure, danger, legend.

Titles: do you write the books first and the title comes next or does the title come to you as you write?
It was until the very last minute, print version being proofed, and I still hadn’t finalized the title. I did have two different working titles… but I found out both were already taken.

What’s your favorite season/weather?
Warm, hot, spring and summer. I like the beach and the sun and BBQ’ing late into the evening. Short days, and cold weather are enjoyable on occasion. But I end up doing nothing besides lazing around on the couch and eating.

How did you celebrate the sale of your first book?
To be honest I still haven’t celebrated. I kept getting requests to go out and enjoy the fruits of my labor with friends, but I am saving the celebration until I sell my first hundred copies… then I will feel I have reason to celebrate!

Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book?
Join the adventures of two young brothers, and a warrior princess, as they journey to fulfill a legend that will bring peace to the broken world of Terrezial.

One food you would never eat?
Live squid. Yes, it is a thing, in South Korea.

If you could choose only one time period and place to live, when and where would you live and why?
I would choose the mid 17th century. A time of great exploration and new knowledge. I would not live on any specific continent, but I would sign myself up to live on a ship, and explore the unknown world.

What made you decide to write in this genre?
The idea of the adventure novel, the exploration of the great unknown, intrigues me to no end. I have always wanted to read the story that I have written. The tale of a world with so much mystery and enchantment. A world where anything can happen and where it is not limited by the rules of our world. Though my book is set in a fantasy world I tend to categorize it more often as adventure. The mythical world of Terrezial is the setting of the great journey.

How do you juggle writing and family life?
That is the hardest part. When I first started writing this book I was younger, single, foot-loose and fancy free. Now I have a delightful 1 and a half year old daughter, a wonderful wife, and two adopted mutts that we brought back after living in Taiwan. (that is another story…) Now I have to work my day job, spend time with the family and try to find time to write and market my writing. The best way I have found to do so is to go after dinner and sit at the local coffee shop, plug in my headphones, and focus intently for a meaningful few hours. It can be hard but the caffeine helps…

What is your favorite scene in the book? Which scene or characters were the most difficult for you to write and why?
The most difficult scene also is my most favorite. Not to give anything away but the ending of the book is a tense and frightening battle that flips point of view between Adam and Avery, (the two brothers). It was a struggle to try and get it right, and there is a moment at the very end where I hope I did it justice. I hope the reader finds it to be as emotional and as captivating as I had hoped.

A Tale of Two Brothers

This is a tale of the land of Terrezial, a vast desert wasteland, filled with all manner of terrifying beasts. Long ago a terrible battle was fought, and with it came the destruction of the lush and vibrant land that once existed. There are few who remember that peaceful land, but those who do whisper the words of a hope, a dream, a legend.

Adam and Avery, two young brothers, who live with their adoptive Aunt Mace, could not be more unaware of that forgotten past. They know only the life they have been shown, a peaceful, and quiet existence in a small village. It is not until shortly after their 12th arrival day that they are presented with a startling decision: They must leave everything they have ever known, and venture directly into danger, or bring about the destruction of everyone and everything they love.

This is a tale of two boys, a princess, and a journey – A journey that awakens an ancient evil, a forgotten hope, and a world that has been waiting.
