Interview

If you could travel in a Time Machine would you go back to the past or into the future?
The past.  There are so many great moments I’d love to see—from big ones like the birth of Christ to less important ones like Nolan Ryan’s 5th no-hitter.  I could list many more.  I don’t really want to waste my one shot at a time machine on going to the future as we’re all heading to the future (slowly) on our own, anyway.

What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?
Butter Pecan.  The best flavor of butter pecan ice cream I have ever had was when we lived in Colorado.  The Safeway stores had a store brand that they called “Ranch” (!!) and it was fantastic!

If you could meet one person who has died who would you choose?
Charles Schulz.  He said that being a cartoonist meant drawing the same thing day after day and year after year without repeating yourself and for 50 years he did it better than anyone else.

Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?
I always have several more in the pipeline.  There are a number of ideas floating around in my head for stories that may not ever move past the idea stage.

Then, there are some notes and starts on novels that have moved from the idea stage to the “let’s give it a try” stage.  Some I will take further, some I have no idea.

After that, come the novels I have actually written a first draft on.  After a first draft, I’ll set it aside for anywhere from three months to a year.  Then, I go back in and sometimes just tweak and sometimes make wholesale changes.  This happens a couple more times before …

At the moment, I have six finished but not-yet-published novels that are just waiting for me to decide it’s time to put them out there.  (There is no science for this decision, just a gut feeling.)

And, of course, after the reader has read “First Time: The Legend of Garison Fitch” I have 15 other novels already published, including two more about Garison and several more about his children and grandchildren.

If you could jump in to a book, and live in that world.. which would it be?
Narnia.  I have wanted to live in Narnia ever since I first read the books in fifth grade

.

What is your dream cast for your book?
When I first started writing it—back in college—my dream cast would have been Tom Selleck as Garison Fitch and Connie Sellecca as Heather.  As they have gotten a bit older since then …

Of current actors my dream team would begin with Zachary Levi as Garison Fitch.  Maybe not as handsome as Selleck, but I think he would bring a sense of humor to Garison, as well as that he has shown his ability to be an action-oriented leading man.  Next, I would want Rachel Hendrix as Heather.  Such a beautiful young woman and an excellent actress!

The big question, then, is who would play Sarah?  The character of Sarah is so important to me—and to the story—that I have never thought of anyone for her role.  Maybe AnnaSophia Robb or Eliza Bennett.

If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be?
BreckenridgeColorado.  My wife and I honeymooned there 23 years ago and we still love going back there.

When you were little, what did you want to be when you “grew up”?
Centerfield for the Houston Astros.  I haven’t grown out of this one, but they so rarely draft middle-aged men with no ability it’s possible I may have to give up on that idea.

Who are your favorite authors of all time?
Louis L’Amour.  CS Lewis.  Agatha Christie.  JRR Tolkien.

Can you see yourself in any of your characters?
Yes.  In a way, it’s all of them, though the people who know me the best see the most of me in Bat Garrett (private detective and friend of Garison’s wife Heather).  Garison gets his shyness from me, Heather has my skepticism, and several of my characters either grew up in my hometown (AbileneTX) or have spent some time there in one of the stories.

Favorite Food?
Chili verde enchiladas from La Casita in Dumas, Texas.

What movie and/or book are you looking forward to this year?
The Hobbit!

If you could have a signed copy of any novel what would it be and why?
“That Hideous Strength” by CS Lewis.  It’s my favorite novel of all-time and he’s in a tie for my favorite author (with Louis L’Amour).

What do you do in your free time?
I draw a comic strip for the local paper, The Moore County News, called “Tuttle’s”.  There’s something soothing about the physical and mental activity of drawing.  Plus, I like the “instant gratification” of being able to show the cartoon off to people as soon as it’s finished and get a chuckle.

Coke or Pepsi?
Dr Pepper!

Pizza or Pasta?
Pizza.

Spontaneity or Planning Ahead?
Spontaneity.

Favorite quote from a movie?
“To my big brother George, the richest man in town.” ~Harry Bailey in “It’s a Wonderful Life”

First Time: The Legend of Garison Fitch

“What if history didn’t happen that way … the first time?”

Garison Fitch was one of the most revered scientists in the Soviet Americas until he left fame behind to work on a secret project in his log cabin in the mountains of Marx.

But something went wrong. Instead of traveling interdimentionally, Garison has traveled through time … twice.

Now, he’s in something called “The United States of America” and a woman he’s never met before is calling herself his wife. It it a hoax? Or, has he somehow changed history?

If so, can he return the world to what he believes is “normal”, or must he live in this strange world he created?

Praise:

“Sam continues to weave his magic as a storyteller. I always find myself anxious to find out what will happen next and what kind of twist will befall the adventurers. It helps to be familiar with the places that the heroines go, which adds to the story.”

~Labdaddy, Texas

“I’ve had a few very unproductive but enjoyable days thanks to Samuel Ben White. If you haven’t read Sam’s books you have been missing a treat. These were funny, suspenseful, spiritual and kept you turning the pages.”

~Karen S.

“Just wanted to say how much I have enjoyed your books. I have a Kindle and I have purchased all of the Garison Fitch novels. I am in Saudi Arabia and your books have really helped take me away from here.”

~Scott, Saudi Arabia

Also Part of the Series:

Saving Time

Two years ago Garison Fitch traveled through time and rewrote history. An accident in the eighteenth century created a whole new world, and even gave Garison a wife he had never met before. Now, he’s got a daughter and he’s coming to enjoy this world he created. Until he’s attacked by men masquerading as Indians, and a funeral procession from out of the past enlists his help, and a tree grows from sappling to full-grown in a matter of minutes, threatening his daughter’s very life. Time itself is unraveling and Garison’s trips through time seem to be the cause. Garison must go back in time once again and keep himself from making the original trip that started the problem. But he can’t use his time machine to go back. How does one sew up a rip in time?

Lost Time
Jason Kerrigan and Brownwyn Dalmouth are pilots with the Republic of Texas Army Air Corps. A world war is going on and bombs have just brought an end to Crockett Air Field in south Texas. Jason and Bronwyn, though, are called away from the battle to be test pilots for a new aircraft that-they’re told-will bring the war to an end. The experimental craft lives up to expectations in early tests, but then it lands them somewhere it never should have sent them. Another place? Another time? Another dimension? Somehow, they’ve taken a trip to the future and changed the past. Or did they? The answer to their change of reality may be known to a Justice of the Peace in Colorado named Garison Fitch. To figure it out, though, Garison may have to team up with his least favorite person: Bat Garrett.
