Welcome to Author Lara Nance
Lara Nance grew up and lived in many cites through the South. She started out with a career in business/marketing for twenty years and then went back to school for a masters in nursing and is currently a nurse practitioner in Virginia Beach, VA.
Having been on the fencing team in college and now living on a sailboat convinces her that she was a pirate in another life, or possibly kin to Errol Flynn… However, due to the unfortunate demise of the romantic pirates of the past, she lives out her fantasies, thrills and adventures in her stories.
From ghosts, witches, and energy vampires to thrilling mysteries and steampunk tales, she is willing to explore a variety of compelling adventures full of danger and suspense, along with a touch of romance. Lara loves to weave interesting true historical tidbits into her fiction which invite the reader to explore further after the novel is finished.
Currently docked in Norfolk, Virginia (until the wind changes) Lara enjoys living on her sailboat and spends time reading, of course writing, indulging a variety of artistic endeavors, cooking and sailing with her husband, Joe and their Yorkie, Rio.
If you could travel in a Time Machine would you go back to the past or into the future?
The future, I would love to see how the earth and civilization progresses.
If you were stranded on a desert island what 3 things would you want with you?
Chocolate, red wine and duct tape.
Night owl, or early bird?
Night owl. I hate getting up in the morning and I hate going to bed at night. I want to keep writing and have to force myself to go to sleep because I have to get up and go to my day job the next morning.
Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.
You’ll lose yourself in a great adventure, escape reality for a while and fall in love with a great bunch of characters.
Any other books in the works?
Yes, I’m on book three of this steampunk trilogy right now, and then I have some projects to do for my agent. Goals for future projects? I’ve wanted to write a sci-fi book about a dystopian future for a while. It would focus on characters instead of action and technology and would be a huge stretch for me as a writer. I had a dream about this idea and it’s been percolating in my head for a year or so. I like the idea of the challenge.
Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.
Having readers I don’t know tell me how much they love my stories.
What is your dream cast for your book?
I’ve always seen Belle as Nicole Kidman and Rett as a young Harrison Ford, a la Indiana Jones.
What’s one piece of advice you would give aspiring authors?
Keep writing. Keep learning the craft, and listen to critiques with an open heart. Most of all, write for yourself and no one else, otherwise you will never develop your own voice.
How did you know you should become an author?
In 1988 I wrote a Star Trek fan fiction novel. I wrote it in pencil in a notebook because I didn’t have a computer back then. The fact that I stuck with it and finished it made me realize I was a writer. I tend to be bored very easily, so completing a novel was a huge accomplishment for me.
Can you see yourself in any of your characters?
Absolutely. There are always elements of myself in my heroines. It’s different for each one, though.
How do you react to a bad review?
I give myself just one day to be angry/sad/ hurt, then put it behind me and go back to writing. That’s a rule. One day, then get on with the next book.
How did you celebrate the sale of your first book?
My husband brought home flowers and champagne.
What TV show/movie/book do you watch/read that you’d be embarrassed to admit?
Big Bang Theory, I’m a closet nerd. In fact, I just e-mailed CBS last week and asked them to have the characters in the show get into some steampunk experiences. So if it happens…you’ll know where the idea came from!
Harry Potter or Twilight?
Cats or Dog?
Dog – my Yorkie, Rio
What is you favorite way to spend a rainy day?
Writing, of course!
What is something people would be surprised to know about you?
I live on a sailboat.
