Character Interview:  Matt Archer

Today, fourteen-year-old Matt Archer is stopping by to chat with us about his new occupation: monster hunting.

So, Matt, how in the world did a freshman in high school end up with this kind of after-school job? I mean, most guys your age mow lawns or bag groceries for pocket cash.

There are days I kinda wish I was mowing lawns; I’d be less likely to get squashed. But, if you’re wondering how this happened, my uncle and I were attacked by a monster on a camping trip. When the monster knocked out my uncle, it came after me. I found a knife in my uncle’s backpack and…um…killed it.  I never planned to kill anything; it just happened. Later, I found out the knife was magical and that it had taken a liking to me for some strange reason. The knife wouldn’t let anyone else use it, so I became a wielder and that’s how I started hunting monsters.

Does anyone other than your uncle know about your job?

A few, but it’s classified, so we can’t talk about it. I have no idea how I’m going to keep my mom from finding out. If she does, she’ll ground me until I’m thirty. Maybe longer.

Let’s talk about your family some. What are they like?

My mom is a lawyer and pretty busy, but she still makes dinner for us most nights and she’s an awesome cook. My older brother, Brent, plays strong-safety on the varsity football team and will probably play in college, too. He’s not too bad, although he did threaten to give me a swirly the other day for daring to walk into his room. He can be a jackass like that, sometimes.

My older sister, Mamie, is a freaking genius and generally amazing person. I know most guys think it’s stupid to actually like your sister, but I do. On the other hand, she is kind of a snoop and I’m scared she’s going to catch onto my job. She’s so smart, it’s only a matter of time before she finds out.

Uncle Mike is my mom’s brother and a Green Beret on reservist status…for now. He’s going to deploy soon and I’m bummed about that. I really wish he could stick around and help me with the knife and stuff, but when the Army calls you up, you have to go.

I’m sure it’s tough to see him go. So, what about school?

Boring.

Okay…um, I hear you’ve had the same best friend since first grade.

Yeah—Will Cruessan. My mom calls him “her other kid” because we’re always hanging out together. Will’s the kind of guy who’d give you the shirt off his back. Of course, his family is richer than Peyton Manning, so it wouldn’t be a big deal for him to buy another one. But he doesn’t let that stuff go to his head much, which is why he’s a good friend.

And what’s this we hear about a certain redhead?

I don’t think I should talk about that.

Oh, come on. Please?

Fine, okay.  Her name is Ella and she’s beautiful. She’s also dating a basketball player who would beat the snot out of me if I got too close to his girl. *whispers* But it’d be worth the beat down. That’s for sure.

Now see, that wasn’t too bad. So, last question. Any advice for us “civilians” if we encounter a monster?

Run. I’m completely serious here. Run as fast and hard as you can, then hide and hope the monster loses interest in chasing you.

Wow, scary advice. Well, thanks for the time, Matt. I’m sure you’re pretty busy these days, so we’ll wrap it up here.

Thanks. Yeah, I’m behind on my history homework (I sit next to Ella and I don’t pay enough attention in class), so I have to finish it before I head out to hunt…um, you didn’t hear that last part, okay?

Okay. Be safe out there!

Thanks…you, too.

Matt Archer Monster Hunter

Fourteen-year-old Matt Archer spends his days studying Algebra, hanging out with his best friend and crushing on the Goddess of Greenhill High, Ella Mitchell. To be honest, he thinks his life is pretty lame until he discovers something terrifying on a weekend camping trip at the local state park.

Monsters are real. And living in his backyard.

But that’s not the half of it. After Matt is forced to kill a strange creature to save his uncle, he finds out that the weird knife he took from his uncle’s bag has a secret, one that will change Matt’s life. The knife was designed with one purpose: to hunt monsters. And it’s chosen Matt as its wielder.

Now Matt’s part of a world he didn’t know existed, working with a covert military unit dedicated to eliminating walking nightmares. Faced with a prophecy about a looming dark war, Matt soon realizes his upcoming Algebra test is the least of his worries.

His new double life leaves Matt wondering which is tougher: hunting monsters or asking Ella Mitchell for a date?
