The Music and the Story
(plus a major announcement)
First, let me say a big thank you for participating in my tour for Transcend. I’ve been asked to talk a little about music and my stories. Those of you who know me know that I am a huge music geek. I grew up playing the viola with an orchestra throughout my childhood. As a result, I learned a lot about music theory, classic music and “ear training”.  I’ve composed, conducted orchestras, and played everything from solos to large orchestral productions. Yes, music is deeply ingrained in my creative soul.
So, it’s not at all surprising that I am hugely influenced by music. All sorts of music—classic, soundtrack, lyrical, poetic, gothic—you name it, I am pretty influenced by it. And nowhere is that influence more evident than in Transcend.
This story is steeped in my love of music. From the violin pieces mentioned by name throughout the book, to the musical references between Ien and Kiera, to the Phantom vibe throughout the book…yes, this is my own musical tribute!
In looking at all of my novels so far, the influence of music is clear. With Transcend there are lyric quotes from the musical that stayed with me as I wrote the book. With the “Requiem series”, I credit Mozart’s Requiem as a major influence on everything from title, to structure to the plot of the series. Even some of my shelved work was started because of a particular song or the feeling evoked from a soundtrack.
Yes…music is woven into my soul and evident in everything I write. My guess…music will always be my first muse.
And now…on to an exclusive special announcement.  I am beyond pleased to announce that Compass Press has bought two more stories in what we are calling the Phantom Series, set for release in 2013 and 2014. These yet untitled novels will feature a companion novel releasing in 2013 and a sequel releasing in 2014. WOO HOO!!!!  And yes – you heard it here first (unless the PW announcement already went out. LOL!)

Transcend by Christine Fonseca

All seventeen-year-old composer Ien Montgomery desires is an escape from his family’s rigid expectations for his life; someone to inspire his music. When he meets a beautiful violin-prodigy, Kiera McDougal, his life music takes on new life. With her, he imagines a future outside of his parents’ control. That is, until a horrible accident tears them apart.
Sent to die in a sanatorium, Ien’s obsession for Kiera grows unbearable. Tortured by thoughts he can’t escape and the truth of his monstrous disfigurement, he flees, desperate to exact revenge on the people that ruined his life – his parents. But, vengeance is empty. Betrayed by those closest to him, Ien discovers that the price for his happiness may be his sanity.
Set amidst the landscape of New York’s Gilded Age, and inspired by Phantom of the Opera, TRANSCEND exposes the fine line between love and madness.
