Book Review: Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver

Title: Before I Fall
Author: Lauren Oliver
Publisher: Harper Collins
Released: March 2, 2010
Series: None – Stand Alone

Book Summary:

What if you only had one day to live? What would you do? Who would you kiss? And how far would you go to save your own life?
Samantha Kingston has it all: looks, popularity, the perfect boyfriend. Friday, February 12, should be just another day in her charmed life. Instead, it turns out to be her last.
The catch: Samantha still wakes up the next morning. Living the last day of her life seven times during one miraculous week, she will untangle the mystery surrounding her death–and discover the true value of everything she is in danger of losing.

The last 1/4 of the book was fabulous but reading the first 3/4 to appreciate the last part was not easy.  There was a lot of content in this book so much so that it was really hard for me to keep reading.  I loved Lauren Oliver’s Delirium series so I pushed through this one and made it but it was a struggle for me.

My high school experience was so different than Samantha’s.  I found it hard to relate to her and really just didn’t like her.  She was so shallow and self centered it made me half crazy reading as she did the same selfish things day after day.  And really that was sort of the point of the book, we really weren’t suppossed to like her until the end.  Thankfully by the end of the book she was able to redeem herself in my eyes as she put right many of her wrongs.

This is another one of those young adult books that is really well written but I wish had less “content”.

Rating: 3.5 Stars – Good Book

Content: Lots of swearing so much so that it was really hard for me to keep reading, also smoking, drinking, drugs, lots of talk of sex, innuendo, inappropriate student/teacher encounter, suicide, bullying…
