Author Interview: Possession by Elana Johnson (plus giveaway)

Welcome to Author Elana Johnson

Elana wishes she could experience her first kiss again, tell the mean girl where to shove it, and have cool superpowers like reading minds and controlling fire. To fulfill her desires, she writes young adult science fiction and fantasy.

Using her boring human powers, she graduated from Southern Utah University with Summa Cum Laude honors in Elementary Education with a minor in Mathematics. She started her teaching career as an upper grade music and art specialist. After a four-year stint in 3rd grade, she is currently the technology specialist.

In her world, Oreos and bacon would be the only food groups. Everyone would drive 10 over the speed limit. Winter would be eliminated as a season, and Jeff Probst would be President. As it is, she lives with her husband and two kids in central Utah, gets cited when she drives too fast and eats Oreos only on special occasions.

She is the author of From the Query to the Call, an ebook that every writer needs to read before they query.

She runs a personal blog on publishing and is a founding author of the QueryTracker blog, a regular contributor to The League of Extraordinary Writers, and a co-organizer of WriteOnCon. She is a member of SCBWI, ANWA, and LDStorymakers.

Elana is represented by Michelle Andelman of Regal Literary.

Interview:
If you could travel in a Time Machine would you go back to the past or into the future?
Oh, definitely into the future. I like my running water and flush toilets. And technology! I don’t know what people did without the internet.

If you were stranded on a desert island what 3 things would you want with you?
Bubble gum, a really good book, and sunscreen. I burn in about 10 minutes!

What is one book everyone should read?
SKIN HUNGER by Kathleen Duey.

If you were a superhero what would your name be?
Mrs. Wolverine? Yeah, I’d like that.

If you could have any superpower what would you choose?
To fly! I’m so impatient, and flying would really cut down on travel time.

What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?
Mint chocolate chip.

If you could meet one person who has died who would you choose?
John Adams – I love the movie 1776, and all he did for American independence.

What is your favorite thing to eat for breakfast?
Bacon, eggs, and hashbrowns. Preferably cooked by someone else!

Night owl, or early bird?
Night owl these days. I strongly dislike getting up early.

Skittles or M&Ms?
Hmm… peanut butter M&Ms win over skittles. But regular M&Ms lose to skittles…

Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?
I’m working on a variety of projects. I’m trying my hand at writing in verse. I’m exploring the contemporary market. I want to write a thriller. My first loves are science fiction and fantasy, and I have a couple of those too. So I’m all over the place!

Is there a song you could list as the theme song for your book or any of your characters?

I think the song “Waiting for the End” by Linkin Park sums up the third book in the Possession series, ABANDON.

What’s one piece of advice you would give aspiring authors?
Don’t be in a hurry to publish. Enjoy the time you have now, without deadlines and pressure, to experiment and get better.

How did you know you should become an author?
Well, I’d written a book. And I thought that maybe I should do something with it. So I dove into figuring out how to get it published. Two years later—and a lot of rejection letters—I found an agent. Once I start doing something, it takes a lot to get me to quit. I just knew if I kept trying, I’d make it eventually.

Favorite Food?
Bacon!

What do you do in your free time?

Read!

How did you celebrate the sale of your first book?

I went out to dinner with my family and my brother and sister-in-law. We went to dinner, but I ordered a side of bacon. Craziness ensued.

Finish the sentence- one book I wish I had written is….
THE ADORATION OF JENNA FOX by Mary E. Pearson. Okay, and SHADOW AND BONE by Leigh Bardugo.

Write a Haiku about your book:

In POSSESSION, Vi

Needs to make her choice: Control,

Or be control-ed. (Haiku is hard!)

Possession by Elana Johnson

Vi knows the Rule: Girls don’t walk with boys, and they never even think about kissing them. But no one makes Vi want to break the Rules more than Zenn…and since the Thinkers have chosen him as Vi’s future match, how much trouble can one kiss cause? The Thinkers may have brainwashed the rest of the population, but Vi is determined to think for herself.
But the Thinkers are unusually persuasive, and they’re set on convincing Vi to become one of them…starting by brainwashing Zenn. Vi can’t leave Zenn in the Thinkers’ hands, but she’s wary of joining the rebellion, especially since that means teaming up with Jag. Jag is egotistical, charismatic, and dangerous–everything Zenn’s not. Vi can’t quite trust Jag and can’t quite resist him, but she also can’t give up on Zenn.
This is a game of control or be controlled. And Vi has no choice but to play.
