Author Interview & Book Giveaway: The Childe by C.A. Kunz

Welcome to Author Carol & Adam Kunz
Carol Kunz was born in New Ferry, England. Her interest in the supernatural was first sparked upon reading Bram Stoker’s Dracula at the age of eleven. As a teenager, her fascination with the mythology behind vampires, werewolves and witches continued. Being an avid reader, Carol finds it easy to spend several hours wrapped up in a great fantasy novel.

Adam Kunz was born in Newport News, Virginia. Growing up, he was a huge fan of creature features and books about things that go bump in the night. When he’s not busy writing, Adam enjoys his job at a certain theme park in Orlando, Florida as a décor consultant. This job brings him face to face with all sorts of nightmarish creatures, especially when he decorates the haunted houses for the park’s annual Halloween event.

Carol and Adam currently reside forty-five minutes away from each other in the sunny state of Florida.

Night owl, or early bird?
Carol – A night owl for sure. I’m not so useful in the early a.m.
Adam –I’m definitely a night owl. All of my coolest ideas come to me then, and I also find that I can focus and write the best at night.

Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?
Carol and Adam – We’re actually working on finishing up the first book in our new dystopian fantasy trilogy, entitled The Modified, which is scheduled to release this fall. We’re also writing the third novel in The Childe series, entitled Wicked Darlings, which is scheduled to release this winter. There are also a few anthologies that we’re very interested in participating in. Oh, and we have many other ideas for stories stored in our computers that we can’t wait to dive into.

Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.

Carol – – I agree with Adam’s answers below, but one other experience really stands out to me. It happened during a middle school’s reading night after we had visited their classrooms during the day. A teacher came up to me and asked if I had an extra copy of a The Childe t-shirt she could have. I asked her if it was for a student and she hesitated and then told me it was for her. She was going to wear it as she wrote her first novel. She’s 60 and thought she was too old to write until she heard me talk about my experiences. I told her that I’d keep in touch and make sure that she follows through with her dream, just like I have. I’m all about paying it forward.
Adam – The most rewarding experience since being published would have to be meeting our first super fan. It was so surreal to talk with someone that completely loved our books and even went as far as to say we were her favorite authors ever. It gave us such a sense of affirmation that no award or professional review could ever give us. A close second would definitely have to be when we received an email from a mother who claimed that her son absolutely hated to read, but really liked The Childe. He even used our book for a report he had to do for school.

If you could jump in to a book, and live in that world…which would it be?

Carol – My favorite series growing up was The Chronicles of Narnia, and I have the old, dog-eared books to prove it. So Narnia would definitely be the world I’d love to jump into.
Adam – This question is so easy for me to answer…Harry Potter of course. I mean who wouldn’t want to be a student at Hogwarts. The world that J.K. Rowling has created is just so imaginative and richly detailed that I can’t see myself jumping into any other book world.

What is your dream cast for your book?

Carol and Adam – We’re just going to cast the main characters, if that’s okay because we have a lot of side characters.

  • Cat Colvin (Main character) – Molly C. Quinn

  • Julie Winters (One of Cat’s best friends) – Dakota Fanning

  • Elle Porter (One of Cat’s best friends) – Abigail Breslin

  • Amanda Stevens (One of Cat’s best friends) – Chloe Moretz

  • Matt Thomas (One of Cat’s best friends) – Jason Dolley

  • Sam Colvin (Cat’s father) – Nathan Fillion

  • Rachel Colvin (Cat’s mother) – Rachel Weisz

  • Taylor Colvin (Cat’s brother) –  William Moseley

  • Ryan Beckford – Robbie Amell

What was your favorite book when you were a child/teen?

Carol – Okay, so I’m going to be repetitious, but my favorite books were The Chronicles of Narnia. I so love this series.
Adam – I was always a huge fan of the Goosebumps series and also the Fear Street series by R.L. Stine. But my favorite book when I was a teen was the Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire.

Is there a song you could list as the theme song for your book or any of your characters?

Carol and Adam – It’s funny that you asked us this question because we actually have a music soundtrack for The Childe series. So to answer your question we have a song entitled “With You” and it perfectly describes Cat and Ryan’s relationship in our book. It’s such a sweet song, and in our opinion sounds just like we’d imagine a smile sounding if it was turned into a song. You can actually “hear” the singer Erin Lovelace smiling as she sings this song.

What’s one piece of advice you would give aspiring authors?

Carol – Do it and never give up! And the best piece of advice I can give is don’t wait until my age to do it.
Adam – Never give up on something that you’re passionate about, even if people tell you that you’re wasting your time. If you have a dream, life is too short not to pursue it.

Favorite Candy?
Carol – Tootsie Rolls because they’re low in calories and I still get my chocolate fix.
Adam – Mine would definitely have to be Reese’s peanut butter cups. I mean, how can you go wrong with peanut butter inside of chocolate?

If you could have a signed copy of any novel what would it be and why?
Carol – I’m such a bore, I know it, but I would love to have a signed copy of “The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe” by C.S. Lewis. Of course the author would have to return from the dead to achieve this.
Adam – That would have to be The Goblet of Fire singed by J.K. Rowling because she is my idol, and the fourth book just so happens to also be my favorite of the series.

What’s your favorite season/weather?
Carol – I love the fall because of the colors, pumpkins, Halloween, and Thanksgiving.
Adam – The fall because my favorite holiday is Halloween, and also Starbucks makes pumpkin spice lattes during this season as well. Not to mention the change in temperature and change is color of all the foliage (even though here in Florida we don’t actually have a fall).

In your wildest dreams, which author would you love to co-author a book with?

Carol – Present day author would be Sherrilyn Kenyon. I have all her books, and I absolutely positively love them all!
Adam – So this answer is probably pretty obvious if you’ve been reading my responses thus far. I would love to co-write a book with none other than J.K. Rowling herself. I think it would just be such an awesome experience, and not to mention that I’d learn so much from her.

Print or Ebook?
Carol – I love holding a real book in my hand, but since my accident, I find it hard to hold the book for very long. I finally decided to try the Kindle and it makes reading so much easier.
Adam – Though I do enjoy reading on the Kindle, there’s just something about reading the actual book that makes me so happy. Turning the pages by hand and smelling the pages of the book just puts a smile on my face.

Favorite quote from a movie?
Carol – “You’re gonna need a bigger boat!” from Jaws
Adam – “It takes a great deal of courage to stand up to your enemies, but a great deal more to stand up to your friends.” –Dumbledore(Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone)

What is your favorite way to spend a rainy day?
Carol – I love to write on rainy days, but unlike Adam, I drink English tea instead of coffee.
Adam – I love to write on rainy days while sipping on some coffee. There’s just something about the sound of rain hitting the roof that relaxes me and gets the creative juices flowing.

The Childe

Cat Colvin
Average Teenager?
Or Something Else Entirely?

Cat Colvin is pretty much your typical run-of-the-mill teenager. Sure, she’s taller than most girls, has a mane of fiery red hair that’s impossible to tame, is left-handed, and her eyes are two different colors, but that’s where the differences end… unless you include the minor detail of her slow transformation into a Childe.

High school can definitely be challenging, and for Cat it’s no different. This is especially true when she’s faced with the daunting task of trying to hide her budding Childe traits as they begin to reveal themselves at the most inopportune times. To make matters worse, her family is oddly dead set against Ryan, the boy she grows to like. But everyone has their secrets: is Ryan really what he seems to be, and what is Cat’s family not telling her?

The Childe is the first book in this coming-of-age fantasy series which follows Cat’s life through the twists and turns toward finding out whom and what she really is. Come and take the plunge with Cat into a world filled with mystery, biting humor, and the paranormal.

Dark Days

Surviving tenth grade is the least of Cat Colvin’s worries.

Cat Colvin wants more than anything to just be an “average” teenager and blend in, but having found out the secret of her adoption has Cat questioning her entire life. Unfortunately, there are much deeper and darker secrets being withheld from her that may prove to threaten her very existence. Cat will be forced to make a choice: stay in Astoria and possibly endanger all that she loves, or flee and hide amongst her kind.

Friendships will be tested, family bonds will be tried, and even Cat herself will be pushed to her limits both emotionally and physically; all while trying to maintain a somewhat normal relationship with her boyfriend Ryan. What is actually going on in the quaint port town of Astoria, and are Cat and her loved ones prepared for the dark days that loom ahead?
