Author Interview & Book Giveaway: I Believe in Jesus Too by Mark S. Nielsen

Welcome to Author Mark S. Nielsen

Mark S. Nielsen is a seminary teacher in Mesa, Arizona, where he lives with his wife, Anne, their children, Mary and Sam, and their dog, Chula. They like to go on road trips, run through the sprinklers, ride their bikes, and pet the stingrays at the zoo. Like millions of people all over the world, they believe in Jesus too.

If you could have any superpower what would you choose?
I would definitely want to fly if I could have any superpower.

If you could meet one person who has died who would you choose?
I am a seminary teacher, so I am constantly wondering about how things happened in the scriptures and wondering why certain prophets said certain things. I would love to meet many prophets, but because we are studying the Old Testament in seminary this year, I would probably choose Moses.

What is your favorite thing to eat for breakfast?
My mom’s spaghetti. The sauce takes about 6 hours to make, and when we make it, I eat spaghetti for breakfast, lunch, and dinner until it is gone. I am serious.

Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.
You should read my book to your children, your grandchildren, your neighbors, your primary class, your nieces and nephews, and to everyone, because not only will every child love the illustrations, but their eyes will be opened up a little more to how diverse our Church really is and to how much our Savior loves children all over the world even though they are all different. (how shameless was that?)

Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?
I just signed for book #2 with Deseret Book making “I Believe in Jesus Too” the first in a series. Keep your eyes open for more “I Believe….” children’s books!  I have written a ton more religious and non-religious children’s books that I also hope will get published in the future. I really hope this is the beginning of a writing career because I absolutely love it. It’s been a dream of mine since I was in 5th grade.

Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.
My most rewarding experience since being published is watching my five year old daughter start writing and illustrating her own little books. She wanted to go door to door selling them, I balked at the idea, so we announced her books on facebook instead…and she sold 7 books! She was really happy!

If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be?
If I could choose, I would travel the world and live in a different country every 2 years, but if I had to settle down, I would be a cowboy in Midway, Utah. I love it there! It’s not too far from a city and it has a nice country feel to it.

What is your favorite Quote?
“Life is hard; it’s harder if you’re stupid.” John Wayne

Hidden talent?
I haven’t lost a hand stand contest in a long time. I challenge my seminary students all of the time. My record is a little over a minute walking on my hands around my seminary classroom.

If you were a bird, which one would you be?
A hummingbird because they can fly backwards and they can flap their wings in a figure eight motion over 200 times a second. That is fast! (I think I know a little too much about hummingbirds). I wouldn’t mind being an owl too (because of Harry Potter)…or a bald eagle.

What do you do in your free time?
In my free time I like to travel, play with my kids, play soccer, watch movies, go to the zoo with my family, swim with my children, eat out, read, and of course…write!

What’s your favorite season/weather?
I like the “BER” months…you know, SeptemBER, OctoBER, NovemBER, and DecemBER. I like the holidays, the cooler weather, college football, Thanksgiving & Christmas food, and everyone seems to be happier during those months. I know I am.

What TV show/movie/book do you watch/read that you’d be embarrassed to admit?
Don’t get me wrong, I love Lord of the Rings, Rudy, and the Jason Bourne Series, but I like feel good cheesy, chick flick movies too. I am embarrassed to admit that I liked all of the High School Musicals, You’ve Got Mail, Pollyanna, and Justin Bieber’s Never say Never movie.

Favorite sport?
I like to play every sport, but I love to watch college Football!

City or Country?
I live in the city now, but I want to live in the country some day. I secretly want to be a cowboy, own some land and a farm, wear cowboy boots and a big belt buckle, and just live off of the land with my wife and children.

PC or Mac?
I am a wannabe Mac. I don’t own a Mac, but if I had more money I would own everything Mac.

Beach or Pool?
I have always enjoyed the beach, but my wife is from San Diego and grew up next to the beach, and since our marriage I have learned to love the beach even more.

Shoes or Sandals?
Since I have moved to Arizona from Utah 10 years ago, I have worn flip flops year round. So…sandals.

Cats or Dog?
Definitely a dog. I am allergic to cats and I had a dog as a young boy. I think I cried harder leaving my dog to go on my mission to Spain than I did leaving my parents.

Facebook or Twitter?
I really like Facebook. Twitter…I am still getting the hang of it!

What is something people would be surprised to know about you?
I love Bonsai trees and have collected them since I was a little kid.  One of my trees that I currently have is a rock ficus Bonsai tree. I purchased “Giuseppe” from Kauai while we are on our honeymoon and named him after an Italian Restaurant we ate at called Giuseppe’s. “Giuseppe” is 13 years old and is growing out of a lava rock. I hope this isn’t too weird to share. I admit it, I like my trees.

I Believe in Jesus Too

All around the world, Latter-day Saint children go to church, sing songs, pray, read scriptures, participate in family home evening, and get baptized. We may meet in different types of buildings or speak different languages, but we have a lot in common. Why? Because no matter where we live, we all love and believe in Jesus, and He loves each one of us just the same. Are you like Pablo, Dimitri, Bayani, Junpei, and Shamara? Do you believe in Jesus too?
