Interview:
If you could travel in a Time Machine would you go back to the past or into the future?

Future. I’m the same way with what I read and write. I don’t want to know what already happened, I want to know what’s going to happen.
If you could have any superpower what would you choose?

The ability to transport like in Star Trek: “Beam me up, Scottie.” I’d never have to fly on an airplane again. I could see friends and family in faraway places. It would be good for the environment.
Night owl, or early bird?

I’m an early bird. I tend to wake early and write. It makes me feel productive, but also kind of boring, because I have to go to bed early, too.
Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.

You’ll experience and emotional satisfaction and the story will make you think about moral and ethical dilemmas.
What inspired you to want to become a writer?

This is a kind of lame, but I once won over a girl I had a terrible crush on by writing her love letters. That made me think I could make things happen with the written word. The relationship didn’t last. The writing did.
What is your dream cast for your book?

I don’t know about the entire cast, but I’d love Laura Linney to play one of my protagonists.
Who are your favorite authors of all time?

Philip Roth, Margaret Atwood, John Irving, Ernest Hemingway, Lorrie Moore, Tom Perrotta, Raymond Carver, JD Salinger . . .
Can you see yourself in any of your characters?

I can see myself in all of my characters. A part of me—real or imagined—is in every character, from the villains to the heroes, the kids to the adults. They’re the people I can’t, or won’t, become, yet want to experience what they do.
What’s the craziest writing idea you’ve had?

A three-part series on reincarnation. First part: person discovers he has been reincarnated. Second part: society drastically changes as evidence of reincarnation is accepted. Third part: How people live their lives differently knowing that what they do in this life will determine their next life. I don’t think I’ll ever get this written.
What do you do in your free time?

Wife, kids. Running. Mountain bikes.
If someone wrote a book about your life, what would the title be?

Kleinstein the Not Quite Genius
What’s your favorite season/weather?

Autumn: Changing leaves, crisp air.
Favorite sport?

Hockey. I played, my son plays. We like to watch it on TV and go to games.
TV or Movies?

Movies. Unless it’s a compelling TV series like Breaking Bad or Sopranos.
Print or Ebook?

Print. I’ve never read an Ebook but I’m all in favor of them if they help get people to read more. I’m old school: I like the feel of books, the covers. Plus books serve as furniture in my house. I’ve got full bookshelves in almost every room.
Action or Drama?

Drama. It’s what makes a story.
Cats or Dog?

I’m a cat guy. We’ve got two. I like their quiet dignity.
Favorite quote from a movie?

So many great ones to choose from, but I was recently thinking about the movie, The Graduate. “Mrs. Robinson—you are trying to seduce me . . . Aren’t you?”
