Author Interview & Book Giveaway: Sylvia Massara

Welcome to Author Sylvia Massara

Sylvia Massara has always lived in a dreamworld of her own making and has been writing since her early teens. She has written a number of plays, screenplays and, most recently, novels. Massara lives in Sydney, Australia, with four-legged daughter, Mitzy (a very demanding and critical kitty).
As a multi-genre author, Massara draws on her varied experience from having worked in the field of human resources across many industries, including the glamorous world of hospitality, retail, professional services and wholesaling, to name a few.
One of Massara’s favourite genres is romance — romantic comedy — and she has a soft spot for older chicks who are in their 40s and beyond. One of her novels, “The Other Boyfriend”, is loosely based on her own life experience while she lived in Taiwan and Hong Kong and she had just turned 41. Massara followed through with “Like Casablanca”, another romanctic comedy about internet dating, and she drew on some of her own experiences as she went in search of “the one” (whom, by the way, she never found).

On a more serious note, Massara wrote a very touching general fiction drama, “The Soul Bearers”, a story inspired by real life events and filled with hope and inspiration when overcoming life’s tough obstacles while learning to live and love again.

An avid fan of classic black and white Hollywood movies of the 40s, including film noir, Massara has now embarked on a contemporary mystery series whose protagonist is an older, spunky and wiseass chick at 48, and who works in the international world of hotels. The theme is comedic, touched with a little bit of film noir, and the stories are fast-paced and set in the modern day world. The first novel in the series “Playing With The Bad Boys” — A Mia Ferrari mystery — was released in March, 2012.

If you could travel in a Time Machine would you go back to the past or into the future?
I would go back to the past — Renaissance Italy — and see if I could learn a bit of painting from the masters.

What is one book everyone should read?
To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee

If you were a superhero what would your name be?
I love cats so much that I guess I’d have to borrow the name Catwoman 🙂

If you could have any superpower what would you choose?
To stay young (around age 30) for the next 1000 years

If you could meet one person who has died who would you choose?
I would rather bring back my mother, who was my best friend and inspiration. I miss her so much 🙁

Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.
My books have something for everyone: drama, comedy, mystery, laughter, tears, inspiration, and sassy protagonists on the cusp of 40+. Chick power. Yay!

Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?
Currently working on the second novel of my mystery series, featuring female sleuth Mia Ferrari.

What inspired you to want to become a writer?
Ever since I can remember I wanted to be an actress, but I listened to my parents and got a “secure job” instead 🙁 By the time I realised I wasn’t being true to myself, I decided to throw caution to the wind and did a small stint in acting. But by then it was too late for me to develop an acting career; so I turned to my other love: writing. I’ve been writing ever since primary school, and have loved it ever since.

If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be?
I would divide my time between Australia and Italy. I’m already living in Australia, so I’m halfway there 🙂

Who are your favorite authors of all time?
Shakespeare, Jane Austen, Harper Lee, Truman Capote.

Can you see yourself in any of your characters?
There is a big part of me in all my female protagonists, but I would say I am mostly like Mia Ferrari in “Playing With The Bad Boys” and Sarah Jamison in “The Other Boyfriend”

What’s the best advice anyone has ever given you?
If you ever buy property hang onto it for the long term. How I wish I would have listened to my father now!

Hidden talent?
I can do martial arts–mostly Tae Kwon Do–and can still crack someone’s head with the nanchucks

Favorite Food?

You have won one million dollars what is the first thing that you would buy?
A quaint villa in Tuscany.

What do you do in your free time?
Drink lots of cappuccinos and plot my next murder 🙂

If someone wrote a book about your life, what would the title be?
An unsolvable puzzle.
