Book Giveaway & Author Interview: Elemental by Emily White

Welcome to Author Emily White

Emily White lives in NY, wedged between two of the Great Lakes and a few feet of snow and ice. She’s spent most of her life running away from the cold, and even spent a year in Iraq, but now contents herself with writing her characters into warm, exotic places in faraway galaxies. When not tapping away at her computer keys, she can be found reading, reading, and reading some more. And when she’s not doing that, she’s usually playing video games with her husband, peek-a-boo with her kids, or walking through her garden, wondering why the bugs insist on eating all her vegetables. Emily’s debut YA Sci-fi novel, ELEMENTAL, will be published by Spencer Hill Press in 2012.

If you could have any superpower what would you choose?
Flying! I honestly can’t think of anything that would be cooler.

What is your favorite thing to eat for breakfast?
Oh my goodness, I LOVE breakfast sandwiches. Egg, sausage, and cheese on a deeelicious gluten free bagel. Mmmm…I’m salivating just thinking about it.

One food you would never eat?
Monkey brains. People really eat that! *shudder* Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book. You should read it because I would be sad if you didn’t and because it has cool paranormal aliens, nifty techs, kissing, and explosions.

Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?
I’m currently working on revisions for FAE, the sequel to Elemental! After that I will start work on the third in the trilogy. This series is my top priority at this point, so though I may play around with other projects here and there, this is the one that gets my attention. Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published. Meeting so many amazing people. All the book bloggers, authors, and editors I’ve gotten to know since starting this journey has really made the whole experience so much better. I mean, it’s wonderful anyway, but I didn’t expect to become friends with so many different people because of it. It’s a wonderful surprise.

What is your dream cast for your book?
Well, I just found the perfect Ella! Elle Fanning. She is exactly what I’ve had in my head this entire time and I didn’t even know she existed until about a week ago. Why yes, I DO live under a rock 🙂 Other than that, I’ve never found the perfect actors for the rest of my characters. Naveen Andrews (from Lost) is the closest I could find for Malik, but he’s still not exactly right. Way too old, for one. Probably Steve Buscemi for Ranen. Of course, now that I’m forced to think about it, I’m googling up a storm. 😉 When I find the perfect actors for my two favorite characters (besides Ella, of course), I’ll get back to you. What was your favorite book when you were a child/teen? Where the Red Fern Grows, by Wilson Rawls. I still bawl like a baby whenever I read it. Is there a song you could list as the theme song for your book or any of your characters? Monster, by Skillet. This song is perfect. It’s like they read my book and wrote the song just for it.

What’s the craziest writing idea you’ve had?
The craziest writing idea I’ve ever had is one I’m actually doing in Fae. I still can’t believe I’m attempting it. I really wish I could tell you what it was! But alas, that would probably get me into trouble with my publisher. 😮 Just know that it’s a pretty crazy attempt. I just hope I’m not a complete dummy for thinking I might be able to pull it off.

Hidden talent?
I can say the alphabet backwards. Oh yeah. 🙂

How do you react to a bad review?
I take up the drink. Hehehehe! No, no! I haven’t gotten a whole lot of reviews yet, so this is a part of published life I have yet to experience. I hope I handle it well. I’m sure I will. At any rate, however I handle it, it won’t become public. That could get embarrassing.

ELEMENTAL by Emily White

Just because Ella can burn someone to the ground with her mind doesn’t mean she should.
But she wants to.
For ten years—ever since she was a small child—Ella has been held prisoner. Now that she has escaped, she needs answers.
Who is she? Why was she taken? And who is the boy with the beautiful green eyes who haunts her memories?
Is Ella the prophesied Destructor… or will she be the one who’s destroyed?
