Author Interview & Ebook Giveaway – Cursed: Wickedly Fun Stories by Susan Abel Sullivan

Welcome to Author Susan Abel Sullivan

I write predominantly urban fantasy and speculative Young Adult fiction, usually with a wickedly dark sense of humor. I’ve written a smattering of horror, and even some bona fide science fiction, and have recenlty tried my hand at writing songs about vampire hookers from outer space and fried zombie dee-light!
Some of my favorite authors are:
Stephen King, Janet Evanovich, Peter Straub, Clive Barker, Carrie Vaughn, Sue Grafton, Allen Steele, Robert McCammon, & Richard Adams..
In additon to writing, I hold a BS in Exercise Science from Auburn Univsersity and am a certified Group X & Water Fitness instructor, Personal Trainer, Fitness Specialist, Lifestyle & Weight Management Coach, as well as a licensed Zumba Fitness instructor.

I live in a spooky Victorian house in northeastern Alabama with a husband, two dogs, and way too many cats. And I write a monthly column for the Calhoun Community Press: FUNdamental Fitness.

Interview:
Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.
Step into the world of my imagination and let me entertain you with tales of quirky fantasy and darkly funny wit.

Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?
Yes, I’m revising THE WEREDOG WHISPERER, an urban fantasy. And I’m writing the discovery draft of a YA about a school for the supernaturally challenged.

What inspired you to want to become a writer? How did you know you should become an author?
I’m drawn to most of the creative arts, such as Writing, Dance, Music, Voice, Art, Drama, and Film Making. As a writer, I get to be actor, director, set designer, and choreographer all at once. I’m a storyteller at heart and an entertainer by nature. It runs in my family.

What was your favorite book when you were a child/teen?
My favorite book as a child was the Trixie Belden Mystery series. Trixie lived in upstate New York and solved local mysteries. She was something of a tomboy and I could relate to that.

What’s one piece of advice you would give aspiring authors?
Realize that becoming a professional writer/author is a long process; don’t get hung up on getting the first book/story you write published. If you work at your craft, you’ll continue to improve to the point where people will want to pay you money for your work.

When you were little, what did you want to be when you “grew up”?
I wanted to be an entertainer—a dancer, singer, and actor. I still perform in community theater and at fiction slams.

Who are your favorite authors of all time?
I have too many to list, but some of my favorites are: Stephen King, Peter Straub, JRR Tolkein, Janet Evanovich, Carrie Vaughn, Allen Steele, Lane Robins, Phyllis Curott, Clive Barker, and J.K. Rowling.

Can you see yourself in any of your characters?
There’s a part of me in almost all of my characters.

What’s the craziest writing idea you’ve had?
Song writing. After a 15 month stint of community theater, I came away with not only lyrics, but music for a couple of songs about a restaurant that serves fried zombie and movie monsters that step out of the screen and wreak havoc at a Drive-in.

What’s the best advice anyone has ever given you?
Never, ever, under any circumstances, give up.

Which authors have influenced you most and how?
Janet Evanovich’s fun, zany humor.
Stephen King’s highly visual style and his superb characterizations.
J.K. Rowling’s light hearted storytelling and clever world building.

What do you do in your free time?
What free time? Seriously. When I’m not writing, I work as a Fitness Instructor/Exercise Specialist and teach a variety of classes including Zumba. I do strive to read at least a half hour every day.

How did you celebrate the sale of your first book?
First I did a happy dance all over my office. Then my husband took me out to dinner.

In your wildest dreams, which author would you love to co-author a book with?
I have a writer friend named Abby Goldsmith who is a phenomenally talented artist and graphic designer. I would love to have her illustrate the YA novel I’m currently working on.

What is something people would be surprised to know about you?
I love reptiles and have a pet king snake appropriately named Stephen Kingsnake, or Steve, for short. Maybe that isn’t so surprising, after all. *laughs*
