Author Interview & Book Giveaway: Horse Charmer by Angelia Almos

Welcome to author Angelia Amos

I formed a lifelong passion for horses at the age of five when I first convinced my parents to let me take riding lessons. I often combine my two passions, writing and horses, which is why a lot of my writing projects have a horse angle to them.
I’ve been writing off and on since my teens. In the early years, I often quit out of frustration or took a break. But the characters would always return demanding their stories be told.
I actively study the craft of writing through self-study and courses. Earning a Bachelor of Arts in Applied Arts: Creative Writing from Charter Oak State College, and taking courses from the Institute of Children’s LiteratureLong Ridge Writers Group, and the University of California, Los Angeles—Extension Screenwriter’s Certification Program.
I live in the Sierra Nevada Mountains with my hubby, two daughters. two dogs, two cats, and one pony (thinking I need another one to bump the number up to two).

Interview:
Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.
If you were or are a horsey teenager, you’ll love Horse Charmer.

Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?
I’m happy to say I have a long list of future projects. Both a blessing and a curse. I never get bored, but too many projects battling for my attention makes me feel like the popcorn kittens. There is a sequel planned for Horse Charmer which I should finish writing this spring. I have another young adult fantasy, Unicorn Keep, which is currently on submission to publishers. Plus, I also write adult space opera and have a novella I’m currently writing and hope to have finished soon. So, lots of projects in the works.

Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.
I got a random compliment on Twitter from a reader who had stumbled across my book at the iTunes store. She then followed me on Twitter just to let me know how much she loved my book. Having someone read one of my books and love it is the most rewarding part of being published.

What is you dream cast for your book?
I actually did cast Horse Charmer way back when I first had the idea, but all the actors have outgrown it now. So, if I was to cast it today I would pick: Chloe Moretz as Princess Cassia, Liam Hemsworth as Luki, Max Irons as Prince Torr, Rachel Weisz as Queen Sarahann, David Guintoli as Julyan, Chris O’Donnell as King Robet, and Viggo Mortenson as King Erich.

What was your favorite book when you were a child/teen?
Battlecry Forever by Joanna Campbell is the first book I remember crying and loving at the same time. I reread that book so many times that I destroyed my copy. I also loved and adored The Secret of the Unicorn Queen series. I vividly remember reading and loving The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle by Avi (the cover art for this edition was so pretty).

Is there a song you could list as the theme song for your book or any of your characters?
I listened to a lot of Enya Memory of Trees and Loreena McKennitt The Book of Secrets while writing and editing Horse Charmer. I didn’t have a particular song, but the Celtic music fits the fantasy element of the book.

If you could be one of the Greek Gods, which would it be and why?
What a timely question. I’m doing Script Frenzy with my oldest daughter’s class in March and April and one of their requirements from their teacher was their scripts have to include some element of Greek mythology. So, I’ve been thinking a lot about the Greek Gods recently. I’ve always had a soft spot for Aphrodite ever since Alexandra Tydings played her in Xena: Warrior Princess. She was such a fun and amusing character.

When you were little, what did you want to be when you “grew up”?
I wanted to be an Olympic 3-day eventer, jockey, movie trick horse trainer, and an actress. And I believe I wanted to be all of them at the same time.

What movie and/or book are you looking forward to this year?
My girls and I are really looking forward to Disney’s Brave coming out this summer. My older daughter and I are also really looking forward to Snow White and the Huntsman.

Favorite places to travel?
I’m addicted to Disney Cruises. Love getting on a Disney ship and not having a care in the world. We’ve done two in the Eastern Caribbean, one to the Mexican Riviera and are scheduled to take one to the Western Caribbean. Kids are entertained, good food, visit interesting and different places, and get to see Disney characters all over the ship. But I would also love to visit Ireland some day.

Favorite quote from a movie?
Just one? Oooh, that’s a hard one. I live by this quote. “Pink is my signature color.” – Shelby, Steel Magnolias

Horse Charmer

At sixteen years old, Cassia would rather spend her days in the royal stables than in the royal court. But as the eldest child of King Robet and Queen Sarahann she obediently performs her duties as the Princess of Karah.

Her safe world changes forever when her father is murdered in the neighboring kingdom of Vespera. Cassia grapples with his loss as her mother prepares her for her new role as queen. Her first task – she must travel to Vespera to marry a prince she barely knows to fulfill the treaty her father signed just before his death.

Nothing is as simple as it seems with political intrigues and unusual powers shadowing Cassia on her search to find out who killed her father and why.
