Author Interview & Book Giveaway: My Hare Line and the Hat by Patsy M. Henry

Welcome to Author Patsy M. Henry

My husband, Jerry, and I live in Bainbridge, Georgia where we are active members of First Baptist Church. We enjoy taking care of the rabbits and spending time in the mountains. We have two grown sons and four grandchildren.

What inspired you to want to become a writer?
In school, I realized that I enjoyed writing.  When I retired in 2008, I had more time to do goals that I had for retirement.  My husband, Jerry, had given me a bunny for Easter in 2003.  So many things happened with the bunnies, and I learned so much. We enjoyed them and took lots of photos.  I decided if I didn’t know those things, there were others out there who did not know them.  That inspired me to share my bunny stories and photos.

How did you know you should become an author?
I did well with writing assignments in school, and when I retired I had the time and the desire to write was there. It occurred to me that I should write about something that I knew about, and that something turned about to be my bunnies.

Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.
That’s an easy one.  I started reading in elementary schools and public libraries.  I wanted to show the bunny photos as I told the children about the bunnies.  At some point, I started showing the photos on a large screen.  The expression on the faces of the children was priceless.  I had ‘reached them’, and those times that I was able to bring one of my bunnies put the event ‘over the top’.  One of those occasions was a reading to 4th graders at a local elementary school.  The thing that made this even more special was that 2 sponsors bought my latest book for each student.  The economy is bad, and most of the students never get to go and do fun things, much less have an autographed book.  It was simply an amazing experience.

Is there a song you could list as the theme song for your book or any of your characters?

As a matter of fact there is a song in “My Hare Line and the Dead Pine Tree”, my third book.  It’s called Rascal’s Lullaby.  Rascal is a male rabbit who is worried about a dead pine tree in his pen.  He is afraid the tree will snap and fall into the pen the next time there is a strong wind.  In a dream, Grandfather Bunny Rabbit tells him to dig a hole so he can be safe if the tree does snap and fall.  At a point in the story after the tree actually snaps and falls, Rascal sings his song.

What’s one piece of advice you would give aspiring authors?
I would tell them that it takes dedication to write a book and find a publisher.  It does not end there.  It takes even more dedication to promote yourself and your book.  Promoting is the toughest hurdle to me.

Any other books in the works?
Yes, I am working on another book in the series about my bunnies.  I am in the process of selecting photos to include in the book.

What do you do in your free time?

I teach Sunday school for the 3 year olds class, assist with Awana, and I serve on the food services committee at my church  One of my goals has been to take better care of myself.  I joined Curves, so I try to go 3 times a week.  Recently, we started doing Zumba as a part of the Curves 30 minute workout twice a week.  Now that really burns the calories!  No, I haven’t lost a lot of weight, but at least I am exercising.  (I would lose weight if I would give up the cookies and ice cream).

What is one book everyone should read?

The Bible.

If you could meet one person who has died who would you choose?
If I could meet one person, it would be my Daughter-in-law, Melissa.  We lost her in 2008 to cancer.  She was 38, and left behind her husband and 2 teenage children.  Such a loss!

Favorite places to travel?
I love the mountains!  The view is breath taking to my husband and I regardless of what season it is.  We spend most of our vacation time in Gatlinburg, TN.

Chocolate or Vanilla?
Definitely chocolate!

Apples or Oranges?
Apples.  Apples are also a favorite treat for my bunnies.  Every afternoon around 4:00 p.m., I go to the rabbit pen when a plastic grocery bag loaded with their apple and carrot.  They don’t take their eyes off me, that is, until I put their treat in their dish!

What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?
Ice cream is my weakness.  I love ice cream!  My favorite is walnut ice cream with bear tracks coming in second.  It just does not get any better than ice cream.  However, I would not turn down an oreo blizzard.

My Hare Line and the Hat

After a pine tree falls and knocks the rabbit pen fence, Brownie asks Rascal if anyone escaped. Rascal thinks this was the silliest thing he had ever heard. As usual, Rascal talks to Aunt Paula Rabbit about what Brownie had said to him. Rascal is shocked to learn that his family is actually quite adventurous! Join Rascal and his adventurous bunny family in My Hare Line and the Hat.
