Author Interview & Book Giveaway: Midnight Child by Bryna Butler

Welcome to Author Bryna Butler.

Bryna Butler pens an original and outrageous take on the legend of the tooth fairy in her debut Midnight Guardian series. Butler’s young adult romance novels feature strong female leads and are woven from elements of comedy, horror, suspense, and mystery, all in a contemporary setting.
Butler holds a bachelor’s degree in mass communications and has spent the last 15+ years working in corporate communications in the financial sector. After hundreds of published press releases and annual reports, she decided to try her hand at fiction. The idea for the Midnight Guardian series came to her in 2008 on a commute from her family farm to the nearby historic small town of Gallipolis, Ohio. [pronounced GAL-uh-POLICE] She started writing the first novel only as a hobby, for the love of the story, never intending for anyone to see the finished manuscript.

Well, not exactly. My name is Bryna, pronounced like Brenda without the “d”. Most people have trouble with it so I’ve been called by many names: Bryan, Burna, Brianna, Bree-na, Beer-na, Brawna, Brenda, Braina… There’s an older gentleman in my neighborhood that calls me Brenda Butter, although he winks when he says it. I answer to them all.

What is your favorite Quote?
That makes me think of another name I go by. My friends call me the Queen of Corn, because I can’t pass up a corny line. My favorite line in the books is in Book 1, Of Sun & Moon, when Keira and Ann walk into Brooke’s bedroom which is completely adorned in white. It has white curtains, white bed linens, even white carpet. Ann takes one look and says, “It’s really white, isn’t it?” Then Keira comes back with, “Like a Yeti’s butt!”.

What movie and book are you looking forward to this year?
Of course, I’m awaiting the Hunger Games movie like everyone else. I’ll be the one in the middle row with the huge tears streaming down her face. As for the book, I’m salivating for Black Dawn, the next in Rachel Caine’s Morganville Vampire series. Wouldn’t David Tennant (former Doctor Who) make a great Myrnin if there was a movie?

If you could disappear with the time traveler from your books would you go back to the past or into the future?
The past. Going to the future always causes trouble, that’s fantasy fiction 101. To quote Doc Brown from the Back to the Future movies, “No one should know too much about their destiny.”

What’s the best advice anyone has ever given you?
It would have to be the piece of advice that led me to become a fiction author. I had written non-fiction for many years, but was hesitant to take the leap into fiction, although I very much wanted to. One day my mother told me to “live life boldly”. The bottom line is that we have so few moments on this earth. You can’t hide your light under a bushel.

If a movie was made about your life, who would you want to play the lead role and why?
My vote would be for Sarah Michelle Gellar. Before Ringer or Buffy, I watched her on All My Children during my teen years. I think that she is an amazing and professional actress who brings thought and a strong sense of emotion to every character. However, I fear that it would more likely be Rosanne Barr in that starring role.

What TV show do you watch that you’d be embarrassed to admit?
I love Jerseylicious on Style network. There I said it. It is so absolutely unlike anything else I watch, but for some reason it just pulled me in. I think it’s the whole Tracey/Olivia dynamic, just the right amount of delicious conflict without being evil or indecent.

What is something people would be surprised to know about you, besides the whole Jerseylicious thing?
I formatted the kindle edition of Midnight Child on my laptop while sitting on elementary school bleachers during my son’s basketball practice. Moms do it all.

Favorite quote from a movie?
“You can do it.” It’s a Sandler/Schneider thing. You’ll hear Adam Sandler say it in Rob Schneider’s movies and Schneider says it in Sandler’s movies. Sometimes the line varies slightly, but I think it’s really cool that they’ve kept that running gag up.

Horror or Romance?
Why choose? My books spike the drama with a great mix of both. Yeah, they’re awesome like that.

In your wildest dreams, which author would you love to co-author a book with?
Hands down it would have to be Charlaine Harris, author of the Southern Vampire series (aka Sookie Stackhouse novels). I’ve watched her in interviews and she just seems like an interesting, fun, down-to-earth person. I think we would really get along and maybe she could get me an invite to the True Blood set. Bonus!

Any other books in the works?
I’m currently working on Book 4, Shadows Rising, with a tentative release in August/September 2012. I’ve planned six books for the series. I’m also working on a young adult werewolf hunter trilogy set in Alaska, called Werewolf Biology, and a ya Christian novel.

Black or White?
White. The good guy always wears white.

Midnight Guardian Series:

Over the years, humans have pieced together sightings and assumptions to create the myth of the tooth fairy. As it turns out, they were pretty much wrong.

Midnight Child:

A child born of sun and moon will impart a human gift to bring forth the fall of the house of Gammen. – Hayes Prophecies
So you read the prophecy. It’s all mystical, but pretty vague. Am I right? Those three, short lines are absolutely frustrating. Lucky me, I’m the one who’s supposed to figure it out. I’m the child born of sun and moon.

Join Keira Ryan as she chases her destiny in this exciting third installment in the Midnight Guardian Series. While Keira searches, her enemies draw closer. A history of trust is tested. A promise of passion turns deadly. A surviving evil creates doubt and there’s only one way to stop it…Find the Gift.
Just what do you get the spoiled gremlin queen that has everything?
