Giveaway & Interview: Awkward by Marni Bates

Welcome to Author Marni Bates

My autobiography MARNI (part of HCI’s Louder Than Words series) was on the New York Public Library Stuff for the Teen Age 2010 List. I then signed a four book contract with KTeen and my first YA novel AWKWARD comes out January 1, 2012. In my free time I can be found reading romance novels, rollerblading, singing really loudly (and off-key) in public and . . . watching copious amounts of television.

If you could travel in a Time Machine would you go back to the past or into the future?
I would choose the past because the future freaks me out. I think the worst possible scenario is seeing that you have a horrible future and being powerless to change it. *Shudder* I think I’d enjoy a quick blast to the past. Although, I’m definitely a 21st Century girl and if I go more than a week without Internet, I get twitchy. I should probably work on that…

If you were stranded on a desert island what 3 things would you want with you?
My MacBook Air (I’m helpless without it), a working flush toilet (I’m not one for roughing it), and sea sickness pills for my long boat trip back to civilization. I do not handle sea voyages well. And by that I mean, if the distance is longer than a swimming pool, you will be transporting me at your peril.

If you were a superhero what would your name be?
Marnes the Noble: provider of books at the speed of light!

What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?
Chocolate chip cookie dough. Have I mentioned that I can be easily bribed?

If you could meet one person who has died who would you choose?
I think I would pick my grandpa. He passed away before I got serious about writing novels and it would be wonderful to share my autobiography (Marni) with him. I’d point to the dedication page, give him an enormous hug, and then I’d take him to Barnes & Noble so he could see Awkward on the shelves! Granted, he’d probably ask me about my backup plan (you know, in case this “writing thing” doesn’t work out) but…I would still love to share my journey with him.

Night owl, or early bird?
Night owl. I procrastinate a lot but I have a hard time going to sleep if I don’t feel like I’ve accomplished anything. This means that I usually do my best work at around 1am while I’m mentally berating myself.

Pet Peeves?
How much room do I have? Okay, here’s a big one: I hate it when people say, “Not to be rude but…” or “Not to sound arrogant but…” Um, then don’t finish your sentence. Whatever comes next is inevitably mean. Equally annoying are the following questions:

1. When are you going to get a real job?
2. What’s your backup plan?
3. Why don’t you write about something important instead?
4. You know what you should write next? Back when I was . . .
5. Oh, you’re an English major? So you’re going to be a teacher.

Most of those questions are ones that writers deal with on a regular basis. And they are best left ignored or unanswered.

Skittles or M&Ms?
Peanut M&Ms are yet another treat that can be used to buy my cooperation. Quite easily.

Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?
I have three books in the works! My goal is to write them all this year. Then again, I’ve been known to make pretty lofty goals that I proceed to ignore.

What was your favorite book when you were a child/teen?
That’s a toss up between The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles by Julie Andrews and The Twinkie Squad by Gordon Korman. Both titles earned me a lot of weird looks over the years, but I absolutely adore them. Julie Andrews changed the way I viewed the world and Gordon Korman introduced me to some of the funniest middle grade and young adult fiction I’ve ever had the great pleasure of reading.

If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be?
Excellent question! As soon as I figure this out, I’ll try to move there! Right now, I’m definitely tempted to rent a place in Los Angeles so I can try to make it in the crazy world of screenwriting. So…we’ll see how that goes.

What is your favorite Quote?
“Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid” ~Albert Einstein

How do you react to a bad review?
I pout. I stare at the screen and glare at the offending words. Then I usually say something like, “Oh yeah! Oh yeah! Well FINE then!” before I storm off and raid the kitchen for mini marshmallows. Then I put on some music, dance around for a little bit, and get on with my life.

What TV show/movie/book do you watch/read that you’d be embarrassed to admit?
MTV’s Teen Wolf.

Finish the sentence- one book I wish I had written is….
The Heist Society by Ally Carter.

In your wildest dreams, which author would you love to co-author a book with?
Either Ally Carter or Meg Cabot for YA (too hard to choose just one!) and Tessa Dare for a romance novel.

Harry Potter or Twilight?
No contest. Harry Potter. Although don’t get me started on that last epilogue because I’m still thoroughly irked. Albus Severus? REALLY?!

Spontaneity or Planning Ahead?
I enjoy it when other people plan things. I’m just terrible at doing it myself.

Facebook or Twitter?

What is you favorite way to spend a rainy day?
Eating Thai food, reading romance novels, and curling up in bed. Preferably all at the same time.

Awkward by Marni Bates

Mackenzie Wellesley has spent her life avoiding the spotlight. At Smith High, she’s the awkward junior people only notice when they need help with homework. Until she sends a burly football player flying with her massive backpack and makes a disastrous – not to mention unwelcome – attempt at CPR. Before the day is out, the whole fiasco explodes on YouTube. And then the strangest thing happens. Suddenly, Mackenzie is an Internet sensation, with four million hits and counting. Sucked into a whirlwind of rock stars, paparazzi, and free designer clothes, she even catches the eye of the most popular guy at school. And that’s when life gets really interesting…
