Debut Author Interview & Book Giveaway: The Boy Project by Kami Kinard

Welcome to Author Kami Kinard

Before she’d finished seventh grade, Kami Kinard had written several books. Most people call these books diaries. Without the details garnered from these early works, The Boy Project might not have been born! A former high school teacher, Kami currently writes from balmy, buggy, and beautiful Beaufort SC where she lives with her husband and two children. You can visit her at www.kamikinard.com.

INTERVIEW:
What is one book everyone should read?
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

If you could have any superpower what would you choose?
I would choose the power to heal.

Night owl, or early bird?
Night owl! If I didn’t have children to get to school I’d probably stay up until 2:00 am every night and wake up around nine.

Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.
My book will make you laugh, or at least smile, and that is good for you!

Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.
I have been overwhelmed by the positive response to THE BOY PROJECT, and the show of support from friends and members of the communities where I launched my book! So many people have told me the book captured their middle school years perfectly, and this includes students who are still in middle school. I feel like I’m reaching my audience and that is extremely rewarding.

When you were little, what did you want to be when you “grew up”?
I always wanted to be an author. No kidding.

If you were a bird, which one would you be?
I am fascinated by birds and have been studying them for a novel in progress, so I would be a raven. Ravens are one of the smartest types of bird! But another reason I’d want to be a raven is because a lot of people consider them bad omens, so they are scared of them. It would be a new and different experience for me to scare someone because, trust me, no one is scared of me now!

You have won one million dollars what is the first thing that you would buy?
I would replace my minivan with something cooler (which would be just about any other vehicle). Yes, I would.

If someone wrote a book about your life, what would the title be?
The Unauthorized Biography of Kami Kinard (If we stuck to the facts, it’d be too boring to read!)

If you could invite any 5 people to dinner who would you choose?
I love funny people, so I’d invite Tina Fey, Bette Midler, Stephen Colbert, Jeff Kinney, and Bill Cosby. Then I’d just sit back, listen, and smile.

What is your guilty pleasure?
Diet Coke.

If you had 24 hours alone how would you spend it?
I would spend it reading, writing, and using my overactive imagination to convince myself that I’d have time to clean house the next day.

Harry Potter or Twilight?
Harry Potter! I’ve read all books in both series, and Rowling is the superior world builder, character creator, and plot developer. But I think it is important to recognize that Meyers did something well too. She captured a very real feeling that teens have: desire. And even teens who make responsible decisions relate to that feeling.

Gum or Breath Mints?
I love chewing gum. It looks so bad to be chomping away while in public, but I’ve always been a gum fan. Mentos gum is my favorite. On a very happy day last fall I found it for 75% off. I now have quite a stash. It’s the little things…

The Boy Project by Kami Kinard

Wildly creative seventh grader, Kara McAllister, just had her best idea yet. She’s going to take notes on all of the boys in her grade (and a few elsewhere) in order to answer a seemingly simple question: How can she get a boyfriend? Kara’s project turns out to be a lot more complicated than she imagined. Soon there are secrets, lies, and an embarrassing incident in the boy’s bathroom. Plus, Kara has to deal with mean girls, her slightly spacey BFF, and some surprising uses for duct tape. Still, if Kara’s research leads her to the right boy, everything may just be worth it…
