Author Interview & Book Giveaway: My Corner of the Sky by Kerri Dyer-Keen

Welcome to Author Kerri Dyer-Keen

Kerri Dyer lives in Ashford, England, with her husband and daughter. Dyer got her start in show business at age 9, performing on a local television show in her hometown in Australia, and eventually worked her way up to singing and dancing in several variety acts on The Mike Walsh and Steve Raymond shows. She also performed at the Sydney Opera House for several years before the accident in 1979. Dyer was a charter member of the Australian Ladies Variety Association in 1979, a charity organization that supported elderly and ill women in the theatrical industry. The A.L.V.A. supported Dyer monetarily for 30 years after her accident. Dyer has been nominated for several awards, including the original Variety Artists Awards for best newcomer in 1975 and best female vocalist in 1978.

Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.
The book, although it’s not written in the ‘normal’ way, is so I have been told by those that have read it – encouraging and inspirational, and makes for a good – sometimes FUN read.

What inspired you to want to become a writer?
The inspiration to become a writer first came when I was not long out the four and a half month coma that I had been in. If you could call what I was doing ‘thinking’ when I was under the hospital blankets, I remember saying to myself, “Wouldn’t this make a great story, and even a super film.” You see, even having just woken up from the coma, my showbiz genes must have kicked in!

What is your dream cast for your book?
If the question means what I would wish for the book, then 1) -I would like to think that the book could be a reasonable success, 2) – that it would hopefully inspire anyone who is going through the same or similar physical problems, and show them that with hard work and determination great things can be achieved, and then 3) I sometimes think what a great human achievement movie it might make.
(But that is kinda wishful thinking maybe!).
As a completely unexpected sideline, the book (or the writing of it) has already inadvertently achieved at least one massively marvelous outcome. It has made me concentrate in order to dredge through the memories. So it has made channeling my thought processes easier! I talk better, I walk more stably, and I am able to configure conversations better.

What was your favorite book when you were a child/teen?
I grew up in a family that didn’t really read. I read books for school, so I was always reading about kings and queens -princesses and dragons etc. When a teenager I read books about showbiz people – e.g. Judy Garland and lots of Magazine articles. BUT as an adult – again most books were showbiz orientated, and here in England I have read all of the Harry Potter books, because I had a daughter with whom I shared them.

What’s one piece of advice you would give aspiring authors?
My advice to aspiring authors is to research your subject very fully. Don’t do as I did, and start writing without really reading up on HOW TO WRITE!

Is there a song you could list as the theme song for your book or any of your characters?
My book is called after the opening song of my stage show – MY CORNER OF THE SKY, from a show called Pippin. It was always lucky for me when I was performing – hopefully it will be lucky now!!!

If a movie was made about your life, who would you want to play the lead role and why?
The likelihood of a movie being made is very slim, but I think that because it spans so many ages and at least two countries that I would need to leave it to the producers to get whoever would do the most accurate presentation. My story covers nearly 60 years after all.

If you could meet one person who has died who would you choose?
Now who would I like to meet who has died? – Judy Garland!

If you could travel in a Time Machine would you go back to the past or into the future?
To the future I think – I have read about the past, but I don’t know what the future holds for mankind! I have always ‘wanted to know’!

My Corner of the Sky:

She was going to go home with her husband driving the car, in order to get ready to perform a variety show at a leading club in Sydney Australia. Happy, everything seeming normal. Next thing you know – 4 and a half months later – total chaos reigns!
30 years on Kerri is a singer, that can no longer sing! (at the moment!)
Follow her through her growing up years – ‘her time as a witch’! – ‘her time as a club and television entertainer’ – her ‘scary road trip to Darwin’ and ‘performing at the Sydney Opera house’. –
Then she has an accident – Chaos, and the eventual triumph over adversity!
Laugh and cry at all the funny and strange things that made up Kerri’s 3 ‘different’ lives – Sometimes wish that it was your life?
