Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?
I’ve got two other books in the working to complete the Through the Portal Trilogy. I haven’t decided on the titles yet, but the trilogy really becomes a lot more than the first book. It evolves into a much more complex and epic story that I think the readers will enjoy.

If you could jump in to a book, and live in that world.. which would it be?
I love Lyra’s world in Philip Pullman’s The Golden Compass. The daemons (a person’s soul outside their body in animal form) are the best idea and I wish I had thought of it. I think it’d be really cool to have a daemon around that kind of represents my soul and yet balances out my thoughts.

If you could have any superpower what would you choose?
Flying! I really wish I could fly. I have dreams about it occasionally and I love to incorporate it into my writing (hence the Dragon on the cover of Through the Portal).

What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?
I’m lactose intolerant 🙁 just found out a couple months ago. Before that I loved cookies and cream ice cream! But at this point I pretty much love all ice cream ’cause I haven’t had it in so long.

If you could travel in a Time Machine would you go back to the past or into the future?

Definitely the future. I love futuristic stuff and not so much old/traditional stuff. I guess that’s why I like science-fiction and not historical fiction. But yeah, I would love to go into the future and play with the high-tech gadgets and see how the world has evolved.

What is your favorite thing to eat for breakfast?
For my entire elementary school life I ate Life Cereal every single morning for breakfast. Needless to say, I’m sick of it. I had a mini wheaties obsession after that. Then oatmeal. Now since I’m dorming, I eat the school food which is generally like an omelette (no cheese!) or cereal with soy milk, or toast, or something like that.

Night owl, or early bird?
I wish I was an early bird. I really do. I admire those I see running when I drive to work at 4 a.m. (when I would open at Starbucks. Which by the way, is where I work). But I just can’t do it. I don’t even sleep in that late, maybe nine or ten. But I’m just sluggish in the morning. I do however feel vividly awake at night, and that just so happens to be when I do my best work.

One food you would never eat?
I’m all for trying everything once. I tried brussel-sprouts. I wanted to die. Those are so gross. I’m sorry to those who enjoy them–my girlfriend and dad both love them–but I just can’t eat them.

Pet Peeves?
Bad drivers. Please do your best to drive well. Park straight. Use your turn signals. Have plenty of space before switching lanes in front of another driver. Stay in the right lane except for passing. Please and thank you.

If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be?
Southern France. It looks beautiful and I love the french language. I have never been there but I really want to! I took five years of high school french, but was never able to practice it enough. I feel like living in France would force me to learn french much more fluently.

You have won one million dollars what is the first thing that you would buy?
Right now, I would pay off my school loans. Pay for all my tuition for the next four years, and then buy a new laptop or tablet. I would probably get an apartment to live in as well because dorm life at college is not for me. The rest would be set in the bank to rank up interest for my time at Whittier College.

Through the Portal

What’s the worst part of falling through a portal to another world and not being able to get back? When the first person you meet almost gets you killed by a ferocious, fire-breathing dragon. Luckily, Jem and Oliver, two boys who were about to start their first year in high school, are saved by Sierra, a farm girl who is itching to get out of her small town. Together, the three of them set off on a quest to defeat the evil Veroci Regime that is stealing all the magic from the world, but can they do it before the Dragon catches up with them?
