Author Interview & Book Giveaway: Huber Hill and the Dead Man’s Treasure by B.K. Bostick

Welcome to Author B.K. Bostick

B.K. Bostick, author of Dead Man’s Treasure, resides among the magnificent Rocky Mountains. In addition to writing, he has spent his career in education. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Utah and his Masters in Psychology from Utah State University. He has worked as a teacher, after school program coordinator, junior high school counselor, and most recently as a teacher mentor for a University. He loves spending time with his lovely wife and two dogs. In his spare time, he enjoys eating cheetos and watching old episodes of the Twilight Zone.

What is one book everyone should read?
Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks. Even if a zombie apocalypse doesn’t occur, there’s still some useful information in there. FYI- best weapon vs. zombies? A Crowbar- it’s light, portable, and can do massive zombie damage.

Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?
I’m currently one hundred pages into book 2 of Huber Hill, which is set to be released during the fall of 2012. I’m very excited for how it’s turning out. Here’s a hint for readers- book 2 will take place outside the United States.

What was your favorite book when you were a child/teen?
RedWall by Brian Jacques. I remember faking sick in second grade so I could stay home and finish reading it. I regret nothing.

What’s one piece of advice you would give aspiring authors?
Show, don’t tell. A great editor told me that if I have to tell a reader what the character is feeling, I’m not doing my job.

What is your favorite Quote?
“If you would not be forgotten, as soon as you are dead and rotten, either write things worth reading, or do things worth the writing.”
~Benjamin Franklin

Can you see yourself in any of your characters?
I suppose I can see a bit of myself in Huber. When I was a kid, I was pretty quiet and a bit unsure of myself. However, I was very loyal to friends and extremely stubborn when I set my mind to something.

What’s the craziest writing idea you’ve had?
When I was a teenager, I wrote a patent for a glow in the dark basketball system. I called it “Nightball.” Needless to say, it never caught on. I still don’t understand why no one wants to play basketball in the dark. I haven’t written another patent since.

What’s the best advice anyone has ever given you?
My dad always said if you ever find yourself in trouble, just lie…wait, you said best advice? A friend once told me if you’re going to fail, fail spectacularly. In other words, when you decide to do something, jump in with both feet and if you fail, at least you did everything you could.

How do you react to a bad review?
I go and get a Mtn. Dew slurpee and some Reeses Peanut Butter Cups. Then I roll into a ball and cry myself to sleep. In all seriousness, I’d rather someone leave a bad review than no review at all. Not everyone is going to like your book as much as your mom does. I mean, there were even a few people who didn’t like Harry Potter, so you can’t take it personally.

Who or what inspired you to become an author?
A few years after my dad passed away, I was sitting in bed reading a letter he’d written to me before he died. After reading his letter, I thought to myself that life is just too short to not do what you love to do. I started pre-writing Dead Man’s Treasure that night. The story itself is inspired by my grandpa’s many tales of Spanish treasure hidden in the mountains.

In your wildest dreams, which author would you love to co-author a book with?
Neil Gaiman…but there is only one Neil Gaiman and he does not share power (LOTR Reference).
