Blog Tour: Guest Post When I’m Not Writing – Luminous by Dawn Metcalf

Welcome to Author Dawn Metcalf.

Bio:

The role of Dawn Metcalf will be played by the tall brunette in the off-the-shoulder, floor-length leather straightjacket. Makeup by Clinique, buckles by Jada Pinkett-Smith, hair by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop.

I have no good excuse for the way I write. I lived in a normal, loving, suburban home, studied hard, went to college, went to graduate school, got married, had babies, and settled down in northern Connecticut. Despite this wholesome lifestyle, I’ve been clearly corrupted by fairy tales, puppet visionaries, British humour and graphic novels. As a result, I write dark, quirky, and sometimes humorous speculative fiction.

My debut YA novel, LUMINOUS, is due out June 30, 2011 by Dutton Books.

Guest Post: When I’m Not Writing:

When I’m not writing, I am most likely asleep. Even then, I’m writing without words (commonly known as “dreaming” or more often than not “being woken up by a noisy alarm” or “woken up by a noisy small person who looks vaguely like me”). Nevertheless, at one time or another, I’m almost always writing, or thinking about writing, or thinking about trying *not* to think about writing in order to free my mind up for writing…you get the idea. I have a digital recorder in my car and carry pens and pencils everywhere for ideas scribbled hastily on scraps of paper, random envelopes, or backs of recent receipts. I drive and think about characters, I wash dishes and consider plot, it happens all the time: I can’t stop it. Writing. I used to say I write because I can’t *not* write, and that’s really very true.
But, practically speaking, there are other things that I do: I’m a mother, a wife, an advocate, a second degree black belt, a public speaker, a sister, a daughter, a friend, an artist. Each of these things call me to be and do things other than write, but it’s surprising how many of these things involve writing; either emails or outlines, notes to teachers or texts to friends, a lot of To Do lists and calendar schedules. If you cut out writing, I might just implode. There are boring, everyday things like washing dishes or folding laundry, but that hardly counts. There’s kicking people in the head and punching them across the room, which is far more interesting, but often viewed at a safe distance, accompanied by silliness and screaming. There’s getting to play with crayons and blocks and dress-up clothes and puzzle sets…and then my kids come home and it’s all work, work, work! (These tiny persons keep asking what’s for dinner and I wonder why they’re asking me??)
Actually, I love to bake. I enjoy walking in the woods and exploring parks. I hang out with friends and play cards and board games, throw random parties and talk about all sorts of strangeness, usually while cooking meals or creating some crafty thing, I check out art festivals and shows and local fairs and outdoor concerts but really, the thing I do most of the time is sit home and write. In the morning, I drop off kids and write. At night, I cook dinner and help with homework, read to my son, invent stories with my daughter, make sure that they’re washed and brushed and tucked in at night. Then tucked in again. And again. And again.
And then I write some more.
