Interview:

If you could travel in a Time Machine would you go back to the past or into the future?
Future. I can read about what has happened, but no one can predict the future.

What is your favorite thing to eat for breakfast?
Grits with bacon. We call it Southern Ice Cream.

Night owl, or early bird?
Use to be early bird because I had to be at school by 7 am. Now I’m up until 2 or 3 am writing.

One food you would never eat?
Any kind of spider. I had a phobia for many years because a Wolf Spider the size of a baseball ran up my leg underneath my jeans while in Spanish class in high school. I flipped my leg up, wooden clog flying across the room, and spider too. I can finally look at them and have some pretty awesome photos, but don’t bring one near to touching me.

Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.
Odessa is filled with bad-ass characters facing insurmountable odds in impossible situations against horrifying antagonists in a fantastic adventure bordering on truth.

Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?
Lots of things. I’m doing what I think is a novel idea. I took the concept of Dracwald, from Seraphym Wars Series, the evil dragons and such, and rewrote the story for Middle Grade readers, with age-appropriate characters and situations. The series is called Stardust Warriors.
Zarena comes out July 2011; Jeremiah in September 2011; Laman in February 2012; Mercy April 2012 and Magaelbash June 2012. There will be many more written.
I’m also working on a lower Middle Grade (2-3 grade) series about a 13-year-old witch and her cat who was once a 13-year-old girl who was orphaned and accidentally became a cat. They go on adventures through time and space together. This series will be geared for the classroom with teacher’s guides. And during the November NaNoWriMo event, I wrote 2/3 of a Dystopian YA Romance. I hope to have it finished soon. There are several more ponies in my stable, so to speak. Readers can see everything I’m working on at my website The Official Website of Rebecca Ryals Russell, Author.

If you could be one of the Greek Gods, which would it be and why?
Athena, goddess of wisdom, warfare, strategy, heroic endeavor, handicrafts and reason. She is totally bad-ass and everything I would love to be. (While typing this, my 11-year-old son who is reading the Percy Jackson series read over my shoulder and said, “That’s you. I can see you being Athena.” – Yay!)

If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be?
We’ve always wanted a summer home in Ireland. My husband was born and raised in Kilkee, Ireland and I’ve been back with him about 5 times. It’s so beautiful and the cliffs and roaring surf so peaceful. I can easily picture myself overlooking the Atlantic and writing away.

What is your favorite Quote?
Einstein-“Imagination is more important than knowledge.” I had that up in every classroom I ever taught in.

You have won one million dollars what is the first thing that you would buy?
#1 A used car for my new driver, my son.
#2 A condo for my travel-weary husband to use several nights a week instead of driving 80 miles home every night. For the past 7 years he’s driven from Lake City to Jacksonville because we moved to care for my father after my mother passed away. Now he’s been gone for 3 years, but the housing market collapsed.

What’s your favorite season/weather?
My favorite times or year are Early Spring, while there is no humidity, the breeze is brisk and chilly and Late Autumn for the same reason. We all sit on the front porch of our1909 Victorian home and chat, drink beer and smoke cigars (well, maybe not the kids). I love those times.

In your wildest dreams, which author would you love to co-author a book with?
Didn’t even have to think about this answer. JK Rowling.

Myrna Ashlin Watts is a high school Senior in Jacksonville, Fl when she is transported to a bizarre and primal planet corrupted by demon-dragons. And they want her DEAD. Her problem is, she has been recruited to kill them, too.
Reluctantly, and knowing it is her only way to get back home, she agrees to lead an army of six teens called The Vigorios- battling dragons and monsters while crossing swamps and mountains, forests and seas. She wrangles with mental scars of a demon attack when she was 16 and receiving a vision of those same demons killing her brother 2 years later. Three very different men join her quest—a seasoned demon/dragon-slayer who irritates but beguiles her, a tender and sweet mentor in whom she trusts completely and a roguishly handsome Scientist who sets her senses aflame. How is she expected to lead the others and keep everyone safe with so much inner turmoil? Whom can she trust, if anyone, even herself? How can anyone expect her to be a leader? Much less one who leads an army of kids in a Holy battle?
Will love and lust, jealousy, greed, deceit and distrust break the delicate tie that binds these teen warriors called The Vigorios? Can a troupe of teens help the Seraphym finally defeat the massive empire of evil dominated for eons by the demon-dragons of Dracwald?
