Book Giveaway & Author Interview: Timeless by Alexandra Monir

Welcome to Author Alexandra Monir

Bio:

At the age of 25, author and recording artist Alexandra Monir is releasing both her debut novel, Timeless (Random House; January, 11 2011) and album written and recorded as a companion to the book.

Timeless is a sweeping young adult fantasy novel that spans three fascinating eras in New York history. The novel combines a time-traveling romance, multi-generational family mystery, adventures through New York City’s past, and original music. The result is a thrilling, three-dimensional page-turner for its readers.

Growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area, Alexandra fell in love with writing, acting, and singing. She trained rigorously with professional theater companies, spending her childhood and teen years performing musical theater. Meanwhile at age eight, she began writing a series of short stories centered on the fictional adventures of she and her best friend, which led to the dream of one day becoming a published author.

Alexandra has been performing her own music since the age of fourteen, and moved to LA at seventeen to pursue a full-time career as both a recording artist and a professional writer. She spent her teen years developing her voice and songwriting skills with prolific music producers behind such superstars as Aretha Franklin and Mariah Carey, and spent a few summers as the opening act for Jive and J Records pop stars before being signed by one of the world’s leading music managers, HK Management. Determined to create a signature sound for her music, Alexandra teamed up with the songwriting/production team that helped launch Christina Aguilera to success, Heather Holley & Rob Hoffman. Alexandra’s style combines the smoky sounds of old-school jazz and big band – with contemporary hip-hop beats and pop hooks.

While writing spec scripts and pitching projects for film/TV in Los Angeles, Alexandra came up with the idea for Timeless. She spent over a year researching and writing the book in New York City, and continues to divide her time between LA and New York, where she is writing the sequel.

Whether in books or music, theater or film, Alexandra was born to be a storyteller!

Interview:

If you could travel in a Time Machine would you go back to the past or into the future?
I would definitely go back to the past! I’ve often daydreamed about going back in time and experiencing bygone eras, which is part of what inspired the story of Timeless.

If you were stranded on a desert island what 3 things would you want with you?
First and foremost, my MacBook with working Wi-Fi! As long as I could write, listen to music, and communicate with the world, I’d make it through. 🙂 My last two items would be a giant cooler, which would be filled with fresh drinking water. (I figure I could find something edible somewhere on this island–hopefully!)

What is one book everyone should read?
Can I make this a series? I am a big Harry Potter pusher! Since my brother first urged me to read the books back in 2005, I’ve become obsessed and love introducing the series to the few people I find who haven’t read it yet. 🙂

What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?
This is an easy one–Ben & Jerry’s “Americone Dream.” It is hands-down the greatest ice-cream in the world!

If you could meet one person who has died who would you choose?
My grandmother, an incredible woman and renowned opera singer. She died before I was born.

Night owl, or early bird?
Definitely a night owl. Getting up before 10 AM is no fun.

Pet Peeves?
When people talk with their mouths full, chew with their mouths open, or chomp noisily on gum. Arghhh!

Skittles or M&M’s?
I used to be a Skittles fan, but now I’m way more into M&M’s.

Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.
It has everything: magic, history, music, mystery–and a big romance.

Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.
It’s been so rewarding getting to hear from readers who love the book. Every e-mail, Facebook message and tweet from the readers has meant so much to me! Also, going into Barnes & Noble and seeing my book on the shelves is really an amazing “Am I dreaming?!” feeling.

If you could jump in to a book, and live in that world.. which would it be?
The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, please. I want to go to Hogwarts!

What was your favorite book when you were a child/teen?
As a child, it was definitely The Secret Garden. I still love it!

Is there a song you could list as the theme song for your book or any of your characters?
I actually recorded them! 🙂 “Bring The Colors Back” is the love theme of the book, and “Chasing Time” is Michele’s personal theme–it’s about her journey.

What’s one piece of advice you would give aspiring authors?
Read as much as you possibly can, especially the classics–there is an endless amount to be learned from literary greats of the past. Also be sure to read everything that’s currently doing well in the genre you want to write in, so you can see what is working. Write a little bit every day, even if it’s a detailed letter to a friend, or an entry in your diary. Practice is really what makes writers great!

Nickname?
Alex is my most common nickname, but my older brother has been calling me Xandra Dee since I was a kid. 🙂

If you could have a signed copy of any novel what would it be and why?
Oh my gosh, how cool would it be if I had a signed Jane Austen novel?! Any of them would be amazing, but I’d especially love to have Sense and Sensibility since that one was my favorite growing up.

You have won one million dollars what is the first thing that you would buy?
Hmm… I think I’d use the money to co-finance one of my movie or Broadway musical ideas! 🙂
