Welcome to Author R.M. Smith.

R. M. Smith is an illustrator, author, graphic designer, occasional blogger, drummer, aspiring guitar player, mountain biker and wannabe golfer. He thinks the idea of creating something tangible like a book, which hopefully will be read by kids, is pretty cool. He is the author and illustrator of An “A to Z Walk in the Park” and “Rudy and Cirrus of Karma.” He shares a home in Northern Virginia with Mary, along with two odd cats, a hungry lizard, and a tank of fish.


If you could travel in a Time Machine would you go back to the past or intothe future?
The past. I’d like to compare how I perceive the past and how it really was.

If you could invite any 5 people to dinner who would you choose?
Arnold Palmer, John Lennon, John Riggins, Mark Twain, Kurt Vonnegut

If you were stranded on a desert island what 3 things would you want with you?
A guitar, internet, and coffee

What is your favorite thing to eat for breakfast?
Eggs, sausage, home fries, and toast with coffee.

It’s an exciting story about a troubled kid who finally gets it.

Any other books in the works?
An underwater counting book for the super young crowd

What inspired you to want to become a writer?
It was born out of need to give myself ideas for illustrating.

Can you see yourself in any of your characters?
In my latest book, I think I’m a bit like Eddie. I guess I have a little Rudy as well.

What’s the craziest writing idea you’ve had?
A story about a kid who hates most types of foods and mixes them together to make them good. Not so crazy I guess.

Favorite Food?

What was your favorite children’s book?
It’s gotta be Where the Wild Things Are. If not for the story, definitely for the illustrations.

How do you react to a bad review?
Not so positive. But sometimes they can have positive results.

You have won one million dollars what is the first thing that you would buy?
A house

What’s your favorite season/weather?

What TV show/movie/book do you watch/read that you’d be embarrassed to admit?

Favorite music?
A really small amount of most everything


Rudy and Cirrus of Karma
A mischievous boy named Rudy breaks his mom’s treasured vase and blames his little brother and sister. They’re in trouble and he’s off the hook. His mom sends him on an errand and he trips into a hole where he finds a vase similar to the one he broke. He picks it up and out comes a cloud that becomes a creature that offers him three wishes. Rudy soon stumbles into an adventure that helps him see things in adifferent light. Ages 6-9.
