Blog Tour: Book Review: The Long Weekend by Savita Kalhan

The Long Weekend by Savita Kalhan
Sam knows that he and his friend Lloyd made a colossal mistake when they accepted the ride home. They have ended up in a dark mansion in the middle of nowhere with man who means to harm them. But Sam doesn’t know how to get them out. They were trapped, then separated. Now they are alone. Will either of them get out alive? This gripping and hypnotic thriller will have you reading late into the night.

I admit I was a little worried about this book.  The back cover says not suitable for younger readers.  I read a few reviews that described it as creepy and suggested not reading it late at night.  Consequently it took me over a week to get through because I was worried about the content and opted to not read it at night when I get most of my reading done.  For me it ended up being needless worry.  Yes this book was creepy but not enough to bother me.  Although I admit I’m not a paranoid person and have no problem being home alone and have never feared being kidnapped.  So for some this book might be much more creepy and scary than it was for me.

As to what age this book would be appropriate for it would totally depend on the child.  The main characters in this book are 11 years old.  I would not give this book to my 11 year old to read.  She has nightmares and couldn’t handle a haunted house we went to at Halloween so this book would not be suitable for her.  I have a 13 year old who probably not think twice after reading it.

The book deals with a kidnapping from the perspective of the boys who were kidnapped which is not a fun subject to read about.  The Long Weekend was well written and I wanted to know what happened to the boys but at the same time didn’t want to know because I was afraid it would be too awful.  There was an element of suspense and the unknown that kept me turning the pages and scanning ahead to make sure things didn’t get too terrible.  I liked the way the story ended.

Content: A couple swear words, implied abuse but not graphically described
