Interview:

If you could travel in a Time Machine would you go back to the past or into the future?
There are many eras in the past that I’d like to visit—such as the 1920s, which was a really glamorous time. However, there have been so many advances in society since then, and it would be hard to live without our modern conveniences like the internet and cell phones! I can’t even imagine the technology that will be available in the future—so I think I would prefer to go to the future so I could find out!

If you could invite any 5 people to dinner who would you choose?
Emily Bronte and Sylvia Plath (because I’m in awe of their literary prowess); Kevin Spacey and Jeff Goldblum (I’ve seen them in many interviews and I love their personalities! I think they’d be enchanting dinner guests); and Jake Gyllenhaal (need I say more?).

If you were stranded on a desert island what 3 things would you want with you?
Bottled water; moisturizer; and the internet.

If you could have any superpower what would you choose?
Being able to fly would be nice. I could avoid all those airport delays.

What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?
I’m not a big ice cream fan. Just give me an ice cream sandwich and I’m good.

What is your favorite thing to eat for breakfast?
Pancakes, but I don’t eat them very often because they’re loaded with carbs!

What’s your favorite music genre? Favorite artist? Song?
I’m crazy about music. I love all types of music from various artists and eras. I have so many favorites that I can’t narrow them down.

Is there anything you need in order to write? (ie Chocolate, quiet, music)
Quiet. Lots and lots of quiet.

Night owl, or early bird?
Definitely a night owl.

One food you would never eat?
I never eat seafood. I just don’t like it at all.

Pet Peeves?
Mean people and rude people.

Skittles or M&Ms?
M&Ms for sure.

Favorite Cartoon?
Okay, now you’re making me think back many years to when I actually watched cartoons. I’d have to say Peanuts. I always loved those Charlie Brown holiday specials!

What is your favorite sport to watch on TV?
Ice hockey or tennis.

What is your favorite book that has been made into a movie?
The Godfather.

What do you do when you are in-between books?
I’m never in-between books! Even when I’m working on one, I’m thinking about another. So I’m always writing something.

Where is your favorite place to read/write?
My favorite place to write is in my home office, and my favorite place to read is on my couch.

Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.
You’ll be touched by Ari’s story.

Is there a song you could list as the theme song for your book or any of your characters?
The theme song for my main character, Ari, would be “Here’s Where the Story Ends” by the Sundays. The theme song for the relationship between Ari and her boyfriend, Blake, is definitely “Breathe Your Name” by Sixpence None the Richer.

What is your favorite quote?
“Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened.” ~Dr. Seuss

What is your guilty pleasure?
Reality TV.

What TV show/movie/book do you watch/read that you’d be embarrassed to admit?
Jersey Shore. Yeah, I said it.

How did you celebrate the sale of your first book?
My husband took me out to a great dinner at a beautiful restaurant.

Other Words for Love by Lorraine Zago Rosenthal:

Ari Mitchell feels invisible at her Brooklyn high school. Her hair is too flat, her style too preppy, and her personality too quiet. And outside school, Ari feels outshined by her beautiful, confident best friend, Summer. Their friendship is as complex and confusing as Ari’s relationship with her troubled older sister, Evelyn, a former teenage mom whose handsome firefighter husband fills Ari’s head with guilty fantasies.

When an unexpected inheritance enables Ari to transfer to an elite Manhattan prep school, she makes a wealthy new friend, Leigh. Leigh introduces Ari to the glamorous side of New York—and to her gorgeous cousin, Blake. Ari doesn’t think she stands a chance, but amazingly, Blake asks her out. As their romance heats up, they find themselves involved in an intense, consuming relationship. Ari’s family worries that she is losing touch with the important things in life, like family, hard work, and planning for the future. Meanwhile, Summer warns her that what she feels for Blake is just an infatuation. Not real love. But Ari’s world is awash with new colors, filled with a freshness and an excitement she hasn’t felt in years.

When misfortune befalls Blake’s family, he pulls away, and Ari’s world drains of color. As she struggles to get over the breakup, Ari must finally ask herself: were their feelings true love . . . or something else?
