Author Interview & Book Giveaway: The Forest of Adventures by Katie M. John

Welcome to Katie M. John author of The Forest of Adventures.

Bio:
I was born in Yorkshire, raised in Lincolnshire and I now live in London with my gorgeous husband and beautiful two year old mud-puddle fairy. All of my adult life has been connected to literature, the teaching and writing of it. For me not to have books in the world would be as terrifying as not having air. I’m incredibly fortunate, reading and learning have always been natural and a joy; teaching has taught me to have a great humility about that.

Past or future?
Oh the past definitely; but of course a past without plague, famine, war-far, feudal lords, no poverty and one which was far more aware of personal hygiene and gender/racial equality!
I couldn’t pin myself down to a particular age but my favourites were Elizabethan and Edwardian. I think I would have to skip the Victorian – (Far too uptight) apart from those bohemian Paris days at the Palais Garnier.
The future, to me is always Dystopic and I’m convinced I’ll be arrested for thought-crimes and other subversive behaviours like mass underground rebellion or reading banned books.
Now is cool.

5 people to dinner.
Oscar Wilde, Andre Breton, Edward Cullen, My Husband and a wild card.
Hmm- looking at that again – the husband and Edward Cullen in the same room – not quite such a good idea. Perhaps I’ll just meet Edward for a drink later.

One book that everyone should read.
This is such a hard question. I think Shakespeare’s Macbeth is up there although technically not a ‘book’. If you pinned me down to a book I’d have to go with George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty Four as it is one of the greatest warnings to humanity.

Favourite Music Genre Artist Song.
I have such eclectic music tastes. I like sad & beautiful songs that tell stories and songs with a strong rhythm. My current favourites are Martha Wainright, Madina Lake, The Editors, Florence and The Machine, Nina Simone.

Favourite place to work.
My local coffee shop. It’s the place where I feel I have the least domestic responsibilities and where I can focus on my writing. I love being completely alone surrounded by people; there’s a reassurance in that situation. Writing can be quite insular and there is a danger of complete withdrawal. Also the constant supply of coffee is a good thing – cheesecake not so good.

Pet Peeves.
Rude people who trample on others just because they think they can or because they think they are of a higher value.

Bad Review.
Of course it cuts. Writing is so much an act of the soul that when someone doesn’t like your work, you can’t escape the feeling of being personally rejected. But at the same time you have to be grown up about it and realise that just as not everybody is going to like you, not everybody is going to like your work.
Thankfully, a decade of teaching teenagers has given me a solid perspective on this.

Favourite Cartoon.
The Simpsons. It’s incredibly clever and funny.

Favourite Quote.
“We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.” Oscar Wilde
“In the beginning was the word and the word was with God.” Genesis

Guilty pleasure.
Darkly handsome and brooding male character crushes.

Favourite book when I was a child.
Alice in Wonderland and Grimms Fairytales.

How did I celebrate the sale of my first book.
With a forbidden slice of cheesecake and the purchase of a new Osprey pink leather pencil case (exciting I know!) There will be time to party later.

The Forest of Adventures (Knight Trilogy #1)
Mina Singer is content to finish college, go to university and settle down with her wonderfully kind and loving boy next door. That is until the arrival of the darkly handsome and mysterious Blake Beldevier.
Mina’s love for Blake finds her thrown into the very heart of The Realm; a secret organisation (and entire world) where magic, both light and dark still exist and continue to do battle over the hearts of its people.
Set against the rich backdrop of the darkly romantic Arthurian legend, ‘The Forest of Adventures’ is an exploration of a true and forbidden love; the kind of love that has a price.
