Author Interview & Book Giveaway: Rival by Sara Bennett Wealer

Welcome to Debut Author Sara Bennett Wealer!

Sara Bennett Wealer grew up in Manhattan, Kansas (the “Little Apple”), where she sang with the choir and wrote for her high school newspaper. She majored in vocal performance at the University of Kansas before deciding she had no business trying to make a career as an opera singer. She transferred to journalism school, where nobody cares if you can hit a high C or convincingly portray a Valkyrie. Sara now lives in Cincinnati with her husband and daughters, and she still sings when her schedule allows—most recently with the May Festival Chorus, the official choir of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra.

What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?
Peppermint or coffee/mocha. Or chocolate almond. I can’t decide!

What is your favorite thing to eat for breakfast?
Biscuits and gravy, yum!

Is there anything you need in order to write? (ie Chocolate, quiet, music)
I need quiet, unless I’m in a really public place, and then I can tune out the noise and concentrate.

Night owl, or early bird?
Definitely night owl!

Pet Peeves?
People who write “loose” when they mean “lose” or say they could care less when they mean that they couldn’t care less. Grammar snafus make me cranky!

Skittles or M&Ms?

Favorite Cartoon?
Right now, it’s Penguins of Madagascar

How do you react to a bad review?
Fortunately I haven’t gotten any really bad ones yet. I imagine I’ll be crushed initially, then convince myself not to take it personally. I probably will also cry to my more established author friends, who’ll be able to put the whole thing into perspective.

What is your favorite book that has been made into a movie?
“The House of Mirth” and “Bleak House” – both very depressing. Wonder what that says about me as a person…

What do you do when you are in-between books?
Read other peoples’ books and catch up on my movie/TV watching!

Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.
Because it’s got boys, gossip, music, misunderstandings and an ending that people are saying really surprised them!

If you could jump in to a book, and live in that world.. which would it be?
Hm… maybe Libba Bray’s “Great and Terrible Beauty”

What was your favorite book when you were a child/teen?
As a young girl I loved “The Little Princess” and “The Secret Garden.” And I’ve always loved “Alice in Wonderland” – I find things to be intrigued by in that book no matter what age I am.

Is there a song you could list as the theme song for your book or any of your characters?
“Sing” by Travis and “Cornflake Girl” by Tori Amos

What is your guilty pleasure?
Right now it’s watching Disney Channel and Nickelodeon with my kids. I love “iCarly” and “Wizards of Waverly Place,” “Zeke and Luther” and “Good Luck Charlie” and “Big Time Rush” and tons of other shows I probably shouldn’t enjoy. Plus I can tell the Jonas brothers apart, and I know way more than I ought to about Demi Lovato.

What TV show/movie/book do you watch/read that you’d be embarrassed to admit?
Um… see above.

How did you celebrate the sale of your first book?
I called my mom and said, “It’s finally happening!” Then I made dinner for the family because it was a school night and my life is boring like that!

Rival by Sara Bennett Wealer:

What if your worst enemy turned out to be the best friend you ever had?

Meet Brooke: Popular, powerful and hating every minute of it, she’s the “It” girl at Douglas High in Lake Champion, Minnesota. Her real ambition? Using her operatic mezzo as a ticket back to NYC, where her family lived before her dad ran off with an up and coming male movie star.

Now meet Kathryn: An overachieving soprano with an underachieving savings account, she’s been a leper ever since Brooke punched her at a party junior year. For Kath, music is the key to a much-needed college scholarship.

The stage is set for a high-stakes duet between the two seniors as they prepare for the prestigious Blackmore competition. Brooke and Kathryn work toward the Blackmore with eyes not just on first prize but on one another, each still stinging from a past that started with friendship and ended in betrayal. With competition day nearing, Brooke dreams of escaping the in-crowd for life as a professional singer, but her scheming BFF Chloe has other plans. And when Kathryn gets an unlikely invitation to Homecoming, she suspects Brooke of trying to sabotage her with one last public humiliation.

As pressures mount, Brooke starts to sense that the person she hates most might just be the best friend she ever had. But Kathryn has a decision to make. Can she forgive? Or are some rivalries for life?
