#BIR2010 – Contest: Your Name in a Book by Lani Woodland + Interview

Yara Silva Trilogy #1
Author: Lani Woodland
Released: August 17th 2010
Publisher: Pendrell Publishing

Summary: Sixteen-year-old Yara Silva has always known that ghosts walk alongside the living. Her grandma, like the other females in her family, is a Waker, someone who can see and communicate with ghosts. Yara grew up watching her grandmother taunted and scorned for this unusual ability and doesn’t want that to be her future. She has been dreading the day when she too would see ghosts, and is relieved that the usually dominant Waker gene seems to have skipped her, letting her live a normal teenage life. However, all that changes for Yara on her first day at her elite boarding school when she discovers the gene was only lying dormant. She witnesses a dark mist attack Brent, a handsome fellow student, and rushes to his rescue. Her act of heroism draws the mist’s attention, and the dark spirit begins stalking her. Yara finds herself entrenched in a sixty-year-old curse that haunts the school, threatening not only her life, but the lives of her closest friends as well. Yara soon realizes that the past she was trying to put behind her isn’t going to go quietly.

Welcome to Author Lani Woodland!  I’ve got an interview with Lani & then your chance to have your name written into a sequel to Intrinsical.
If you could travel in a Time Machine would you go back to the past or into the future?
I would go into the past. It would be amazing to revisit memories, places and people I used to know. Imagine being able to see places that no longer exist and people who have died.

Who is your favorite author?
That’s an impossible question to answer. I keep discovering new authors I love. I’m a huge fan of lots of authors. I recently became obsessed with Rachel Caine’s Morganville series and Rachel Vincent’s Soul-Screamer series.

Do you prefer to write on the computer or with paper?
I have horrible penmanship so I’m computer all the way.

Paranormal or Normal?

What kind of book do you read when you get sick?
When I’m sick I love to read books with a fantastic love story. Having my heart all warmed with love makes the rest of me feel better too.

What are your favorite comfort foods?
Chocolate. I love chocolate anytime but when I’m sick or sad nothing makes me feel better than chocolate.

What is your favorite sport to watch on TV?
I love watching women’s gymnastics. I used to do gymnastics and I was nowhere near the level of the girls on TV but I still love watching the girls fly through the air.

Are you a loner or social butterfly?
I’m both. I enjoy being with my friends and meeting new people but I also like to be alone. When I take those personality tests I’m always on the border between extrovert and introvert. I talk a lot but I’m really shy.

If you could trade your life for that of a fictional character, who would that character be?
I’d miss technology but I think I would want to be Anne Shirley. I loved the books and movies.

Which actors would you want to play the main protagonists in your book?
I would want Nina Dobrev, from Vampire Diaries, to play Yara. I also think Paul Wesley, from Vampire Diaries would be a great Brent.

Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.
I think Intrinsical has a little something for everyone, romance, mystery, ghosts, and action.

What was your favorite book when you were a child/teen?
I loved the book A Little Princess.

Is there a song you could list as the theme song for your book or any of your characters?
My husband and his friend actually wrote a song for my book. My husband wrote the words and then his friend Gary composed the music. They played it at the book release party. It was called Can’t Stop Dreaming of You. I loved it!

What do you find so appealing about the genre you write for? Would you try writing for a different genre?
I like the idea of magic being in the world so the supernatural/paranormal always appealed to me. If I had a good enough idea I would try writing for a different genre.

What is your favorite quote?
My favorite quote is actually the poem Hold Fast To Dreams by Langston Hughs. I read it in fourth grade and it really made an impression on me.
Hold fast to dreams

For if dreams die

Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly

Hold fast to dreams

For when dreams go

Life is a barren field

Frozen with snow

..Langston Hughs

You have won one million dollars what is the first thing that you would buy?
I would take my family on a seven night Disney Cruise.

What do you do in your free time?
I love to read whenever I get the chance.

What TV show/movie/book do you watch/read that you’d be embarrassed to admit?
I really liked Saved By the Bell. I looked forward to watching it on Saturday mornings. I was in college when they had the special prime-time episode where Zack and Kelly got married. I made my husband watch it with me.

How did you celebrate the sale of your first book?
I did my official Woo-Hoo dance, called my husband and jumped up and down.

Thank you Lani for answering my questions.
