Interview & Book Giveaway: Author Kathryn Erskine

Welcome to Author Kathryn Erskine. I recently read and enjoyed Kathryn’s book Mockingbird and approached her about doing an interview and giveaway on my blog. Kathryn graciously agreed to take time out of her busy schedule to answer some questions. She also has a great giveaway for you.

BIO:Kathryn Erskine, a lawyer-turned-author, grew up in six countries, an experience that helps her view life, and her writing, from different perspectives. Her novels include QUAKING (Philomel 2007), an ALA Top Ten Quick Pick for Reluctant Readers, MOCKINGBIRD (Philomel 2010), a National Book Award Finalist, Junior Library Guild selection, and ALA Best Fiction for Young Adults nominee and, upcoming, THE ABSOLUTE VALUE OF MIKE (Philomel, Summer 2011). While covering weighty topics, her books have warmth and humor, making difficult issues approachable. She is a writing instructor and frequent workshop presenter.

If you could travel in a Time Machine would you go back to the past or into the future?
Definitely to the Middle Ages in Scotland and England. Then I could do original research on my current novel!

If you could invite any 5 people to dinner who would you choose?
Nelson Mandela, Oprah, Tom Perriello (my former Congressman), Barack and Michelle Obama. I think that’d make for some fascinating conversation.

What is one book everyone should read?TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD by Harper Lee.

What is your favorite thing to eat for breakfast?

How many books do you read a week/month?
Per week: a couple of novels and several picture books. If it’s a really long novel, it might take the whole week. I wish I were a faster reader.

Is there anything you need in order to write? (ie Chocolate, quiet, music)Quiet, the house to myself, light, coffee. OK, some chocolate, too.

Night owl, or early bird?
Early bird. That’s why my bedtime is 10 pm, and my brain turns off before then.

Skittles or M&Ms?
M&M’s. I’m a chocolate lover.

If you could go back in time and meet one author, who would it be and why?
Sister Juana Ines de la Cruz (17th century Mexican poet and playwright) because she had such a curious mind, and sought knowledge and education even when that was unusual for women.

If you could do an Eat, Pray, Love year of living in 3 places, where would you choose?Botswana, New Zealand, Orkney (northern Scottish islands).

Thank you Kathryn for taking the time to answer my questions and for doing giveaway for my followers. To learn more about Kathryn please visit her WEBSITE.

In Caitlin’s world, everything is black or white. Things are good or bad. Anything in between is confusing. That’s the stuff Caitlin’s older brother, Devon, has always explained. But now Devon’s dead, and her father cries a lot. Caitlin wants to get over it, but as an eleven-year-old girl with Asperger’s, she doesn’t know how. When she reads the definition of “closure” in the dictionary, she realizes that is what she and her father need. In her search for Closure, Caitlin discovers that not everything is black and white–the world is full of colors–messy and beautiful, and it is through this discovery that she embarks on a road which leads her to find both healing and Closure.
